CoBaP

This post was TOTALLY inspired by this one...I so wanted to reply to Notablogger's question, that I decided to show what MFSJ and I made together.
let's call it the Collaborative Bag Project!
It was one of those wednesday afternoon of boredom when the two of us were stuck at home...one little sad piece of jeans was saved from the bin and enriched with various bits of wanna-be-projects form years gone by (seriously!)
MFSJ knows what she wants, and is really picky about transferring into reality the idea she has formed in her mind. But this was fun: we spent some great quality time together: she complimented me on my skills, while she took on the role as main designer. It's the only bag she uses on a regular basis, and it's entirely hand-stitched.
The bag is lined with some vichy-patterned fabric which originally I had bought to make furoshikis.
The three apples are crocheted, and I had to work really fast to meet the demands of the designer: forgive me for not sharing the pattern, but I think I just made it up! the same goes for the green leaves... the crocheted heart does have a pattern, but my house is such a mess right now that I can't locate the piece of paper where it's scribbled. the cross-stitched tulip band was meant to be a bookmark, but had been sitting in my sewing box for a good 4 years!
MFSJ made the strap using a circular loom, although it took so long that in the end she asked if mama could finish it.
to close the bag, you need to pass the little ball into a loop and then tie the string together with the one holding the heart. it's all a bit complicated, but we are proud of it: the idea formed into MFSJ's mind and it was NOT easy to please her while I tried my best at translating it into reality.
I like how she TREASURED these lefovers she found, putting them together is such a lovingly-made article!

More recently she made some magnificent drawings, one of which we used for a special card...one to announce a very different type of Collaborative Project!!!
Stay tuned.

L'ho battezzato "The Collaborative Bag Project"!

Stay tuned.

average conversation

This happened this morning, while I was still trying to figure out if I had put the sugar in my coffee...

MFSJ: Mama, welke dag is het vandaag?
ME: Maandag
MFSJ: En welke taal spreken wij vandaag?
ME: ...ehm...wat jij wil?

Translated:
Mom, what day is today?
Monday
And what language do we speak today?
...ehm...the one you want?

I know...mea culpa...it was my idea to have different languages spoken on different days. We started over the weekend. Saturday was Italian Day (because MFJ wants to practice as well), Sunday was English Day (because I want to practice and MFSJ seems to enjoy it)...we did mention we were going to try a Japanese Day as well as a Dutch day, but we hadn't decided yet, hence the question this morning. In the end I suggested that today was "favourite language day" and the little one decided that mama was to speak Italian, she was going to speak dutch (big grin on her face), papa could decide...
We are having a lot of fun with these language days, though...although it's now impossible to mention the word "ice cream" in any language without getting full (undesired) attention! We'll spell it backwards, I guess.
But it's reassuring to see that playing with languages is still a lot of fun and not a burden.

ME: Maandag
MFSJ: En welke taal spreken wij vandaag?
ME: ...ehm...wat jij wil?

Tradotto:
Mamma, che giorno e' oggi?
Lunedi'
e che lingua parliamo oggi?
...ehm...quella che vuoi?

Lo so...mea culpa...me la sono inventata io l'idea di parlare lingue diverse a seconda del giorno. Abbiamo cominciato sabato scorso.

5 little butterflies for the first 5 years of MFSJ! MFSJ wanted a pink cake, her friend requested his favourite
chocolate cake...everyone was pleased with the result. The only thing we bought was the pink glaze. The mint leaves come from the garden: MFSJ knows how good they look and taste together with strawberries, so she rushes to the garden with scissors in her hands as soon as cake decorating requires a strawberry! this was our first trial...next time will be even better.
Recipe Here
This is a muffin-dough recipe, and it's really easy and quick to bake.
You will need two bowls, in the first one sieve and mix all the dry ingredients:
210gr flour
210gr sugar (any variety, this time we used sugar cane, which was available in our pantry)
1/2 sachet baking powder
pinch of salt
70gr unsweetened cocoa powder
50gr chopped chocolate (crushed easter eggs work just as well)
in the second bowl mix
3 eggs
130gr melted butter
150ml milk

Now, line two cake tins of different size (we used a 21cm and a 12cm round tins) with parchment paper.
Mix quickly the content of the two bowls (12 turns of your wooden spoon) and pour the batter into the two tins.
Bake at 180C for 30 minutes.
Once baked, wait for the cakes to cool down. Cut away any bumps (my cakes tend to look always a bit like volcanoes...so I had to slice the top off) and flip them upside down.
I decorated the large cake with pink glaze (but melted white chocolate with a few drops of beetroot juice would do as well) and placed the small cake on top. I applied whipped cream to the top cake, and used a pastry bag (ziplog bag with one corner cut off) to apply the cream to the sides.
decorate as you please.
Enjoy!

70gr cacao in polvere

Leggi tutto

...and from this morning we start...MFSJ started OFFICIALLY school. This morning she left with her dad, armed with backpack, snack (A banana protected by this amazing invention), lunchbox and bottle of juice. This afternoon, mama was waiting outside.

Together we started tailing the group of adults and kids directed to "our" BSO, to get used to yet another novelty (as usual, these "getting used to" initiatives are for mama alone, not for the little one). More than one little kid from MFSJ's class joined the walking bus, and once arrived to destination I discovered that MFSJ has an admirer...D.! He kindly showed us where to put the bag, where to hang the jacket, ...and also where the girls' toilets are located (you can go in here, I wait outsite). Together they munched some bread, then always together went to play. She really didn't want to come home, so I left her there and went for a cup of coffee in total lonelyness. 1/2 hour later I was back, and managed EVENTUALLY to take away. A quick heart-felt goodbye to D. (they see each other tomorrow anyway) and back home we went.
Despite a few hiccups, I have to admit that MFSJ is a real champion of adaptability. I scanned her first school-made drawing: you see the sun, two butterflies, a blue heart, blue clouds and sky, one orange cloud, mama with a pink dress, and, just to demonstrate her writing abilities, her name written fro mright to left (MFJ says I'm obsessed with MFSJ's mathematical and geometrical development, but I claim no merits for this one...she started practicing her name from day one in ALL directions...)
Mommy, both the one in the drawing and the real one, smiles relieved...

to be in a pickle

Vatti a fidare dell'efficienza nederlandica!

...it's translated in italy as "essere nei pasticci". but you see, "pasticcio" is the name given by my side of the family to the lasagne, so it has nothing to do with being in a sticky, sour, unpleasant situation, something that gives the wrong sort of goosebumps. So in this case I really think that "pickle" is more appropriate.
And the pickle in question is the after-school care for MFSJ. Go and trust nederlandic efficiency! Two days ago I called the main office of the BSO to ask if I could take the little one for a little visit, to get her used to the new situation. Answer? the little one was not yet off the waiting list, because there was no place.
WHATTHEHECK? In february you were absolutely sure that you had a place for three days (wednesday, thursday, friday, not the days I need, but I can juggle) and now you flip the omelette before it's properly set?
After a loooong wait on the phone, I get told they'd call me back. Then I receive a strange e-mail saing "we have received your comunication and we will reply within 5 working days". Quick calculations...but in 5 working days, MFSJ will be already at SCHOOL!
Panic: how do you cope without grandparents, aunties, cousins, brothers living nearby? When all your nice neighbors are also working and are never at home?
After many and after much stress, here comes this exchange of words:
"I checked and we can start the contract for June 16"
"my apologies for insisting, but when I registered my daughter for those three days you gave me, I did so because you were sure there was a spot to start with june 1st. the coordinator told me so, I talked to her"
"oh well, then I think we can do like this: we start from the first of June and when you receive the contract, don't send it back and bring it directly to the BSO"
"?????....ok"
Now...first you tell me you have no place, then you state that if I choose Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, I can have a place. Then you tell me she is actually still on the waiting list, but suddenly there is a spot again and there's no problem!?!
So, problem solved, apparently...but this pickle left me a bitter taste in my mouth. The childcare lobbies do not grant any service, they decide when you can work, which is not when you want to work. This is bullying. and in this childcare business, even the nederlandic efficiency goes down the drain: it's the bully who gets what he wants, if he raises his voice, pushes the others and keeps a high visibility profile...

Piccole donne crescono

MFSJ is not that little anymore. When they turn 4, kids are promoted: from peuters (toddler) to kleuters (kid). And the kleuters, it's a fact, go to SCHOOL.
the rite of passage is quite gruesome: you celebrate the birthday at daycare, with a majestic paper crown marked by the sign of four, and the day after off you go, time for school.
I am sure there are at least 100 pedagogic reasons for this type of passage, but tehy don't help me one little bit in fighting the imprinting of generations and generations if italic mothers (And come to think of it, I'd be such a terrible full-time mom): resistant to change and always convinced that NO-ONE can take care of their offspring as well as tehy do.
We are still italo-japaneses not yet converted to the nederlandic culture, so we did make a mess of things: we didn't understand if it was the school we listed MFSJ in who had to call us, or if we had to call them, but at daycare they were adamant: cancel the contract AT LEAST three months before the end (but what do you cancel if you don't know when she REALLY starts?)...and I'll leave the problem of the BSO (buitenschoolse opvang, afterschool care) for the next post: another big blow to italic motherhood ideals, so much guilt to last me a lifetime! I'm sure it will be with me until the rest of my days). Anyway: we messed it up and MFSJ remained in daycare one month too long. but this is really the last week of the last month of the last year.
After a series (3) of getting-used-to days, it was declared that MFSJ is ready for school. No-one thought of testing the mother, right? I'm a nervous wreck: I've got lunch-box stress, juf (teacher)-stress and foreign-language-stress (I do speak dutch, but it's still very foreign to me)...I'm covinced to be the worse mother on earth, I'm totally lost, and while being totally lost I still must hold the hand of a 4-year old creature who very bravely walks through the door with her little bee-backpack on her shoulders. what a couple!
Let's forget for a moment about the foreign language and and the juf-stress...the fact remains that all of a sudden NONE of my experiences as a child will help my little one: I never had a lunchbox during my school years! I always had mummy waiting at home for me (aaaaaaaaah....here goes more guilt). MFJ, on the other hand, comes from lunch-box heaven: Obentos are a joy, not only for the eyes! where in kikkerland, though, tehy excel in...ehm, semplicity? You can't avoid the two slices of bread with the one slice of cheese, accompanied by the one apple and the one glass of milk. sad, I know...but we can't risk lunch-box ostracism, right? I get up at 6.30 and I am already thinking about what to put in the wretched plastic box! Can you put also something sweet? in some schools it is forbidden...for now I invented little sandwhices with "grandma's cheese" and mortadella, with a little side dish of cucumber cubes (so different in taste from the italian ones...here they taste like the white skin of watermelons). Last time I secretly added a piece of sandwhich with jam...
I also promised solemnly to myself to add the MFSJ's lunchbox to the weekly menu...thank God I've got still until next week to study the local habits.

and while we are on the topic of italic mothers: how do you send your kids to the afterschool without getting your heart all crubled down at the bottom of your chest? Why on earth to I torture myself for a non-existing scientific career for which I don't care and that is totally impossible to reconcile with having a family? why do I torture myself knowing that I am missing out on precious moments spent with my daughter, parked at the BSO?

it's more than evident to me that the one in desperate need of "wennendagjes" is mommy. Yes, because you see: MFSJ is doing great! She feels all grown up because she can partecipate to the morning ritual of wrapping the lunchbox in the furoshiki...Little women grow up!
She is really brave: despite not having any kid from daycare currently in her class, she found new friends of which she is really proud. there are two Daniels and a girl, Talla, with whom she plays the most. Saying goodbye in the morning is still quite difficult, but if I look closely, the other kids are not doing much better!

Snow snow everywhere...

another day indoors?
snow snow everywhere
let's paint leaves on the floor.

Sammy, eat your heart out!
last sunday we woke up to yet another day of snow. It would have been nice and romantic to stay under the duvet...after all, when MFJ and I started dating, it used to snow everytime we met (no kidding, even in april)...but MFSJ is in that wonderful age when just waking up to the world is a joy, even at 3am! so we kicked the duvet, and got the day started.
At 10 am we were already done with all the chores and were getting slightly bored...so I finally put hands to the "paint a crust project"...

I think we got ourselves a nice S.Valentine's present. I also got complimented for "my talent in education and making life wonderful"...although I have to split the merit 50/50 with dear husband in this case!
Someone suggested to flog the double-crust, someone else cunningly commented on the possible Gauguin-like influences, and there is also one crazy admirer who would like to book one of our future works...not a bad idea, in fact: MFSJ is loving her paintbrushes more than ever, and our walls are already full, so foster-homes for our masterpieces would be great. Volunteers anyone? you can suggest a theme, a palette of colors and the size of the canvas...

Found in Translation

My life as "lost in translation" seems to have generated a monster.

While I lose myself in details and interpretations despite my rigorous use of resources like interglot, Merriam-Webster and wordreference, MFSJ seems so at ease! three and a half years old and she is already moving her first (and well determined) steps in the field of cultural mediation! She translated Majo no takkyūbin (Kiki's delivery services) live, for Grandma. MFSJ adores, and Grandma is quite keen too, but in this house we have an english/japanese version, no italian...so MFSJ decided that help was needed, and volunteered her own translation/interpretation (in Italian).
Now they are watching SnowWhite...this time MFSJ asked me to set up the DVD in Italian: if you must know, SnowWhite is her "bedtime DVD story" and if she is busy translating, she can't relax, you see? (mind you...she NEVER falls asleep in front of a cartoon...)

Hurray for cultural acrobatics...I wonder if this world we live in comes with a safety net for such exercises... certain somersaults are quite dangerous.

Cooking with dog

I, the Culinary Missionary, hereby declare her concerns about the serious influence of her culinary pursuits on the mental health of MFSJ...and, furthermore, it's NOT entirely all my fault: MFJ discovered this YouTube channel, and we all became instantly avid fans: it's japanese cooking, after all!
Read All

Totoro, Monsters Inc, Mary Poppins...it's all in the past. Not even Dora nor Kikker can beat Francis the dog, host of the show. MFSJ is totally into character. when the chef sieves flour through a wire sieve, my little one swirls her little hand mocking the words like a pro. other favourite words include "brown sugar" and "welsh onions" (I thought they were called leeks...). That's life, I guess...while I observe horrified the ranting on the supermarket floors of childen in desperate need of Sesamestreet cookies or sponge bob orange juices, my angelic devil screams in excitement "mamaaaa, welsh onions, als in kooking met dog" (typical sentence of a multilingual child...no one understands what she is saying, apart from mama and a few selected souls). what can I say: I can't certainly complain if my 3yo walks in tryumph through the door holding a bunch of leeks as if they were a trophy, right?
and what can I say of her use of the japanese language? because of the "we british" past of MFJ, this language is not very frequently used in our household...but since "Cooking with dog" started, MFSJ insists on bowing and saying konnichiwa before chopping the ingredients for our dinner.
Unfortunately the episodes are rather short, maximum 6 munites...up to a couple of weeks ago, every 6 minutes a very demanding little voice would remind you to start another episode, but now she is totally indipendent: MFSJ learnt to use the mouse and can finally click endlessly on her favourite episode: green tea ice cream!

Mary Poppins

MFSJ is enjoying Mary Poppins...in english of course...and insist that mommy stays on the couch with her, to repeat essential words for her, like "chim chimmenee"...otherwise how can we sing?! I have the strong suspicion that I might have passed her my anglophile germs...

But let's be fair...no. I think it's all D&D's fault! D&D are the two very special nederlandic brothers, that MFSJ absolutely adores (the eldest is good for playing and fighting, the youngest is a sort of special cuddly toy, to be pampered ad libitum). Since last saturday D&D are in London and will remain there for a year or so...and therefore we are left to admire the Big Bang and the dome of S. Paul in the beutiful Disney drawings used as backdrops in Mary Poppins...waiting for our first trip to London (MFSJ is convinced we'll go there very soon: care to join?).

tortona

This year we ditched the pancakes...tehy are not such a novelty item anymore, and to celebrate the birthday of our little bundle of joy they didn't seem enough anymore. So...mum here designed a special cake, something that could well end up on the guinness book: no form of chocolate was spared for this one...and certainly I didn't spare on calories...I put custard and whipped cream as well! and yes, three candles.

to spare your artheries I won't put the recipe here. I can only say that it was really appreciated, especially by MFSJ who assisted me while I was making it. I don't know how much it costed her to NOT put her tiny fingers in the little bowls containing the smarties I was sorting by colour (if you want to know, blue ones are something of a rarity!)...maybe she knew it was all in her interest to keep her hands away from the munchies.
I don't know if there is a secret scores-list in the brain of a child, but if it were true, I'm sure this cake, together with the birthday party we threw for her, would place us high up at the top of the list for a long time. The little guests (Daniel, David and Jane) loved also the pizzette I made.
the celebrations ended on monday, with the party at the daycare. for the occasion I was allowed to bake cakes, "as long as tehy are not too sweet". So the classic 1-2-3-yoghurt came in handy...apparently really "lekker" since I didn't bring home any leftover!
MFSJ seems really happy of all the attentions. and the most clumsy mum on the planet is feeling somehow quite proud of herself...

Compleanno

the celebrations for the third birthday of MFSJ are aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalomst reaching an end...she still would very much like to stick to her jumper that piece of paper shaped like a "3" which reads "Corinna is jarig", and for a couple of days we had to sing "lang zal zij leven" in front of the left over cake, while standing on the chair. but it's fun. Tonight we will open the parcel from Japan (it took a while to arrive!). ah, how nice when birthdays are still one digit only, when the candles on the cake don't cause you asthma when you try to blow them out, and when a piece of double chocolate cake with custard filling and white chocolate frosting with smarties decorations just bring you joy, instead of thinking already that to burn all those calories you'll have to start running around town at least three times...

Celerations for MFSJ started early in the morning of saturday...she was still in her bed when the huge red parcel with white polka dots came through the door. the little one is not stupid...she immediately declared "een huis!"...and with the energy of a three year old she shredded the packaging. "oh wow" was her final comment: I love the fact that kids can't lie! her big eyes got even bigger when she saw the second parcel...that was a shapeless one...so she couldn't figure out what it was. in two seconds flat the wrapping was in pieces and the little bed of a hcildren bedroom came out. third pressie was the master bedroom, and fourth one was the kitchen. It's true that we didn't have any dolls to go and live in the house, but that was SOOOO not a problem! if you look carefully at the photo in this post, you'll see that the cheeky monkey found immediately a few homeless in need of a roof above their head. Noah and his wife decided that this boat-full-of-animals businness was not really convenient given their age, and accepted MFSJ invitation. not all is well under the new roof, mind you: Noah sleeps in the wardrobe, while the wife uses the small bed...Noah must have made one big big mistake of some sort, 'cause MFSJ declared "brutto" (i.e. "ugly", but also "evil" or "naughty") while slamming the door on the Great Patriarch's face. to keep the old couple company we have a frog (kikker), present of GH, the little Kawaii-bear which we rescued from a bag of yarns and god-knows-what-else which the japanese grandma keeps to decorate presents, a wooden puzzle-cow which caused a lot of chaos when it entered the kitchen before going to sleep in the big bed, then there's a bunny (again, from Japan), Noah's cat and dog (looks like the big boat might sink without the owners), another cat named Poesje (born from the hands of your faithfully here...when we had a tonsillitis emergency) and, of course, our forever-loved and loving Totoro. MFSJ immediately requested a shopping bag for Noah's wife...she needed urgently to get some groceries, given all those hungry stomachs! my crochet hook was out in no time. two screw-caps from juice bottles became the first pots of the kitchen. and we all agreed not to use the oven: Kawaii uses it as sleeping quarters, to keep warm, you see?...
I don't know who is having more fun: MFSJ with her woden house or her mum making notes of all the events taking place under the new roof? I have to admit that every screw-cap is now carefully inspected (colour and dimantions are important, you know?) and my crochet hook with a selections of yarns is on the windowsill in MFSJ's room...so that I'd be ready in case Noah needed a hammock.

CASA

Ho comprato una casa oggi...col tetto rosso. E' su due piani, quattro stanze. Ho anche scelto cucina, camera matrimoniale e cameretta.
Leggi tutto

I bought a house today...red roof, two storeys, four rooms. I also chose kitchen, master bedroom and children bedroom.
Then I asked for it to be all wrapped in colorful paper...and I started walking with this huge package in my hands.
Did I trick you? It's a dollshouse for MFSJ, 'cause her birthday is dangerously close. While I was walking I thought I looked rather funny: a huge house-shaped present, wrapped in red and white polka dots paper (no flatpack here...this is sold in ONE SOLID PIECE, and no box either). I wanted to attach a message to my back saying "For your information, the furniture is in my handbag"...the huge package (or me carrying it, rather!) caused quite a few smiles (always welcome in sgruntly flatland).
MFSJ is in this phase which I call "the dialogue phase"...she invents and interprets all sorts of words exchange (sometimes the protagonists are her two hands: one trying to pass the other a pencil through the handle of the kitchen cabinet, Mission-Impossible is nothing in comparison!). I am convinced that the best toy is still imagination, but I hope that with the dolls' house I'll be able to join the play, hopefully making things together, bit by bit. MFSJ is great with scissors and paper, and she is a keen seamstress (her creations being still on the "futuristic" side).
Coming back to the big package: only problem is...WE HAVE NO DOLLS. I didn't need them to be identical to us, but...a bit of resemblance, at least? the only families up for sale (gosh...said like that it doesn't sound good, now, does it?) were a white ARIAN one (all blond with blue eyes) and an african one. mhmm...excuse me people...what about almond eyes? Oh well, never mind: I'll make them. Will I still remember how to? and so small? My dolls used to be around 40-50 cm, these shouldn't be taller than 10-15cm!!!

And so it was that MFSJ, at the tender age of 3 years, got her first house ;-)

Bube't

Leggi tutto

Madagascar made his entrance in our house last friday, thanks to the fact that we had guests for dinner and I had to run to the supermarket in a shopping-spree which was NOT part of our saturthlon routine. because of the food crisis (which started before the financial crisis) our usual brand of sushi-rice cannot be found...a disaster for MFJ. Luckily I found it at the supermarket, but I didn't resist, and brought home the DVD (of the movie, not of the rice!)!

The original song is I like to move it, move it but MFSJ rewrote the lyrics (yup!)...she now jumps around like a grasshopper shouting "a-laka-bube-bube't"...hilarious. My collegue asked (in vain) to borrow the DVD, but alas it's not mine! MFSJ-grasshopper brings it everywhere! even on her pillow at night! let's make a deal: I lend you the DVD, and I put MFSJ in attachment...what do you say?;-)

Barista

We are classy, there's no doubt about it! We are the “we British” people, according to MFJ (Call it identity crisis…). Of course the dimensions of our flat limit us a bit in the choice of staff, and we cannot afford to hire full time George The Butler, but we do have our very own barista...she can make an excellent (ehm...well...) coffee, although she is not a good listener...in fact, she really doesn't listen, not a bit.

The little miss can work the espresso machine with great precision, and requires the help of her faithful assistant (aka "mama") to place the coffee powder in the special holder. Oh yeah: the assistant must remember to place the coffee cup OF THE RIGHT colour at the right height for the barista to take it. DO NOT EVER, under any circumstances, place said coffee cup under the nozzle! It would be an unforgivable mistake, and the barista doesn't like such clear indications of sloppiness.
Our little barista has only another tiny defect: she gets distracted. The red and green little lights are SO interesting, and they must be poked as much as one can. And if mama comes dangerously close (i.e. tries to make a coffee for herself), then it's like the end of the world is suddenly in front of your very eyes...she screams "mama, sit" and the strength of her intention glues instantly your posterior bit to the chair. And finally, after sweet and repeated requests (Corinna, please..Corinna, focus, Corinna, don't get distracted...Corinna...CORINNA! F-O-C-U-S!) The magic switch is flicked, and the so-much-needed coffee starts coming out.
And at this point, the barista walks away.
Wha..t? And my coffee? C’mon, it's getting diluted!!! But the barista is lost...you can try to lure her back, beg her to stop the machine (I repeat, don't try to do it by yourself...I repeat: do not do it!) "Corinna...klaar...K-L-A-A-R...CORINNA, KLAAR"! So in the end you get your (diluted) coffee and the barista (such a caring person, really) insist in mixing sugar into the little black swimming pool she just served you.
There you have it: a little bossy barista in the making. I bet next time you come to visit you'll ask for chamomile!
BUT mama got smart too, you know? When mama is in need of coffee and the bossy barista won't let go(screaming expressions such as "niet doen" and "Ikka do it" are quite common), then mama starts the waterworks and runs to daddy for comfort. Oh...Corinna look! You made mamma cry! Believe me it works! She is miss-I-do-it-all but, very caring, comes close to you and kindly encourages you to make the coffee. Not only that, she places her little hand on your lap and tells you which cup to take (mine is always pink, dad's blue), which switch to flick, when to stop the machine...and in the end she declares "goed gedaan, mama"
Thanks sweetheart...I’m in my mid-30s, I do make decent espresso according to our guests, but no one had ever complimented me for my coffee-making performances!

Work

OH MY GOD! Is it true? I’m gonna post something about work?! No, not really…but I know you are all waiting to hear about our trip to Japan, since the jet-lag MUST be well over by now.

Do you believe me if I tell you that I started crocheting again?
My crafts baskets raises from the dust behind the living room courtains only in two occasions: one, tha preparation of omiyage; two, MFSJ is sick. Now, think about it: omiyage-time is over, so it must be that MFSJ was sick, right? Right. She had that classical type of fever that only incubator-mum can cure.

Incubator-mum is that amazing being able to cuddle you and comfort you by wrapping you up in her own sweater…fruit juices, mandarin segments, pieces of bread with jam, water in a glass with sipping straw, warm tea, cold tea, barley tea japanese-style…all piles up on the coffee table in the living room, and the only thing that MFSJ wants is incubator-mum and the DVD of Kiki’s delivery services. Oh yes…Totoro has been forgotten, in favour of the little witch, and her black cat, on the flying broom.
So, while on duty, the incubator-mum made two amigumuri (see the picture, and the size of the 1 euro coin on the left!): my own interpretation of Garfield the cat, which MFSJ declared kawaii, and a japanese-style octopus that was IMMEDIATELY adopted by MFJ (yes, not MFSJ...she didn't even see it!).
But that’s not all! Prof B. was in town. Well yes…one of the most beautiful brains I ever encountered in my short career as wannabe-(and failed, let’s face it)-scientist, the one that 8 years ago pointed his finger towards Holland, thinking that I was most likely to go back…HE was here. Ten minutes of hieroglifics (the type that I tend to rever as oracle’s precious answers to all my scientific questions) and my four neurons were already in overolad. I survived…until he said the usual magic little words “just prepare the sample and we analyse it”. I would have now the perfect answer for him : “salta macaco” (jumps the macaque). I learnt it from the Cestode: schicia il boton e salta macaco" e` un classico degli informatici veneti... Indica quando l'utente pensa che fare un programma sia una cosa semplice semplice, so, apparently, programmers from the italian region Veneto use this amusing expression to indicate when they are dealing with a client who thinks that compiling a program is as easy as just pushing a botton (push the botton and jumps the macaque).
Bottom line is…the macaque here will have to jump aroud the fermentor once more…crochet-missions and MFSJ allowing ;-)
