esiguo specchio in cui guardi un'ellera i suoi corimbi;

Today the poet in me won over the wannabe-scientist...
my "little" (ok, just younger then...) brother just finished his final exams...I was more stressed than when I had to do them. at 9 am of june 18 I was already scrolling down the websites of all major italian newspapers looking for the "titles" (mhmm? I don't know how to translate this one...kids have to write small assays...and they are given specific topics to discuss in writing). anyway: 9am...there I was...JOY! One of the titles mentions Montale, one of my favourite poets...I shouldn't be saying this, because then how do I explain that I didn't know this particular poem?

I rethink your smile, and it's for me as clear water
discovered by chance in between the pebbles of the riverbed
thin mirror for the ivy to look at its flowers;
and over all of this, the hug of a white calm sky.
this is my memory...I wouldn't be able to tell, my dear distant friend,
if your face shows a free and simple soul,
or if you are like one of those pilgrims challenged by evil,
who carry the pains of the world as an amulet.

But this much I can tell you: the thought of you
washes away my dark worries with a wave of peace,
your smile cuts through my grey memory
sharp and crisp as the tip of a young palm against the sky...

I'm sorry...the translation ruins the poem completely...anyway...
the smile of a certain special person pierces my memory...I smile back.
then I read what the kids are supposed to write about...and I get angry, really angry. WHERE ON EARTH can you find the "image of the woman" in the poem? that specific poem? plus, the smile I have in mind belongs to a man!
I don't know, maybe science did really ruin my brain...I can't even understand Montale's poetry anymore.
Then I discover that the Italian Ministry of Education (who edits all the titles for the final exams of the Italian High School) got it wrong...the poem was in fact dedicated to a male dancer, really loved by the poet's wife...my honour is safe. my brain is not completely fried by numbers and single exponential fittings!

on top of that, I now know one more of Montale's poems...hurray!
and since I feel poetic today...here's a little chocolate bonbon of manu-theory: there are some lovely smiles out there, and it doesn't matter what the person behind them is thinking at that moment...those smiles can be SO GOOD for others, others we don't even know.
so...smile, even when the evils of the world are pursuing you...
there might be another Montale out there, ready to write a beautiful poem dedicated to that beautiful smile of yours! Because we are all beautiful when we smile!

bleah...I know...a bit too sweet even for a chocolate bonbon...forgive me, I'll be back to my normal wannabe-scientific self tomorrow.

Ciabattine a Km 0

Zori is the japanese name for flip-flops...cute, elegant, worn with kimono (my suocerina wore them for a week to make sure my feet wouldn’t hurt when I wore her kimono-two years ago!!!). there’s a DIY version of them, very very popular in Japan: nuno-zori.
Leggi tutto

Courses, books, online videos… the nuno-zori fever is spreading in Japan as well as USA and landed finally here, in our household. The only non-japanese of the family spent the entire duration of MFSJ’s afternoon nap to make her very first pair of cloth flip-flops!
Nuno-zori look a lot like waraji, the straw-rope sandals which were common in the past but are now worn only by Buddhist monks.
Well? How many T-shirts are parked in the drawers of your wardrobe? Are you planning to finally wear them after 4 years?! For this project you need 2-3…although in some cases one is enough. Just cut them in 8-10cm strips…long ones. After that, get a nylon rope, sit on the floor with your legs straight in front of you, hold it between your left hand and your toes and start weaving. Yessir, no need for looms: your hands and toes are enough. You might end up with frozen shoulders (Marj, don’t try this, please!) and unable to feel your legs…but hey! It’s so rewarding!
Finding good instructions was not easy. Here’s the video that MFJ found by mistake (I’m sure he is already regretting showing it to me! It costed him already two T-shirts) ...enjoy the presenter: her stitching “style” is painful to say the least! My mum (professional tailor since the age of 8) could not bear to watch it! Then there’s Eco-samurai's blog , from which I took the written instructions....if you then cannot be bothered to cut up your T-shirts but want to “go green” on house-slippers, buy them from nadessicco at etsy.com.
As for myself, I think I found the right summery-hobby to replace my winter knitting!
