sabathlon

Who said that Saturday is meant for resting? Since MFSJ joined us, our Saturday is MADE FOR “working for the week ahead”, get ready for next week.
"Un sabato qualunque...un sabato italiano..."
every weekend I wake up and think about this hideous song of a log time ago...
my "average saturday" is not italian, it's dutch of course, and it's not relaxing at all. It resembles more a relay hurdles race with multiple challenges...we are athletes specialized in satur-thlon: it's fr two runners (me and MFJ) and the baton is MFSJ. It's really a lot of fun, and gives a lot of satisfaction, but like every race it requires daily training, focus, perseverance...and most importantly, you cannot drop the baton!

I can proudly say that we win the gold every time, but we do not go to the government to ask for less taxes, like some italian athletes!
So, how does this satur-thlon work?
Well, in the morning, there's grocery shopping. the night before we prepare for it, a sort of last-minute training, more mental than physical: we write down a LIST. No, no...don't think "jot down", it's meticulously exhaustive, divided per shop and topic. There’s the "supermarket list", the "market-fresh produce" list and the "other stuff" list (usually things for the house, for MFSJ, for the relatives...)
Anyway, on the morning of the race, pardon..."average saturday" this is what happens: all to the starting blocks, ready, set....no no, hang on: MFSJ doesn't want to put on her socks, and without socks, she gets blisters when she wears those shoes.
ok, never mind: you go ahead, you do the supermarket, I convince her. Ready? set...GO! and the first athlete is off, springs out of the front door holding the garbage bag (it's a silent rule in our house: if you get the kid, you don't carry the garbage). He successfully completes his javelin throwing routine and, now free of smelly burdens, jumps on the bike and heads for the supermarket. The second athlete has a much more tactical race ahead, which requires strong nerves and careful planning: MFSJ must put on shoes and jacket. After this somewhat mentally challenging part, we run for the bike...no no, hang on: we forgot Duckie (who is waiting in MFSJ's handbag, and we are girls after all...we do not leave the house without handbag). so, after a false start, here we go again: the athlete springs out of the front door, holding MFSJ and Duckie in the handbag. They reach the bike. After a challenging weight-lifting performance this exceptional sporter is already on the bike, pedaling with fury. Direction? the market.
the race is on....while one is busy throwing boxes and packages in a supermarket trolley, the other carts MFSJ around talking pigdin-dutch to passersby. Pit-stops are painstakingly calculated: only a few stalls (vegetables, fish and spices). then the home-run.

Record timing! and, more important, MFSJ didn't even throw a fit.
oh...sorry: I forgot to tell you, before heading for the shops, we start the washing machine, so that when we are back MFSJ can play with pegs and laundry while we store all the food away.
saturthlon is not over yet: we have to hang the laundry out to dry, cook lunch, wash the dishes, entertain MFSJ who (and very rightly so) wants some attention...must be the only race with an "interactive baton"...

in the afternoon, while MFSJ takes a nap (batons get tired too), we do a bit of cleaning, ironing, dusting...we dream about our future (dreams can be in future tense or present progressive...it doesn't matter). When MFSJ wakes up, we PLAY. One of the athletes take care of the baton, while the other does all the rest (we still don't know what is more challenging): cooking for the week ahead (hurray for Ridge the Fridge and Fraser the Freezer!!! always so welcoming!) washing, ironing, tidying up...MFSJ is also really good at mixing cake-doughs, so we do get alot of baking done too.

the race is almost finished, the arrival is behind the corner. first, dinner (generally fish, since we live at 10km from the sea). For dessert, MFSJ's cake.
then, it's time to hit the water: rubber duckie race and a gavettoni match.
We are at the arrival, MFSJ falls asleep. we cheer...silently of course… and holding our gold medal we proudly...hit the bed!
Tomorrow is another day, and no market.
