La settimana scorsa due dei nostri elettrodomestici ci hanno dato un po’ di problemi: Bernarda la lavatrice e Fraser the Freezer. La prima ha deciso di non pompare piu’ acqua, il secondo ha calato...lo sportello, letteralmente!

Da brava Cattolica Disperata, ho invocato un po’ di santi.... Pero’ mi sono resa conto che qui il problema era specifico...un’Ave Maria mi avrebbe confortato lo spirito...ma solo Sant Idraulico poteva risolvermi il problema...eppure a me di spendere 60 euro solo per far uscire l’idraulico dal suo furgoncino non andava proprio...Cosi’ ho messo il cappello da ficcanaso, quello ereditato dal papa’-faccio-tutto-io e mi sono messa all’opera. Ho tolto l’acqua manualmente, ho aperto il filtro, controllato che le palette della pompa girassero, poi ho tentato di far ripartire la povera Bernarda. Dopo un po’ di “Sgrunt sgrunt” la vecchietta e’ ripartita, e la valvolina si e’ messa a girare. Ma quando ho richiuso il filtro, niente da fare: la Bernarda ha dichiarato che lei non ne voleva sapere. Ho tolto il cappello del papa’, e sono andata alla ricerca del “manuale dei santi”...online! Volevo proprio capire a che santo votarmi. Non ho trovato niente, cosi’ ho chiesto aiuto alla famiglia: stanno tutti in Italia, son piu’ vicini allo Stato Vaticano...qualcuno sapra’ bene chi e’ il santo protettore delle lavatrici! Niente...silenzio...finche’, finalemente ‘Cesco (l’unico che mi prende sul serio!) mi ha mandato il suo essenziale contributo. Nel frattempo la Bernarda era ripartita e probabilmente non sapro’ mai cos’e’ che non aveva funzionato...pero’ per tutti voi, eccovi chi invocare nel caso sfortunato in cui vi si blocchi la lavatrice a meta’ ciclo:
S. CHIARA - PATRONA DELLE LAVANDAIE (qualora si dovesse fare le cose... a mano);
S. COLOMBARO - PROTETTORE DALLE INONDAZIONI (se il danno è grave... e l'acqua scorre...);
S. LUCIA - PATRONA DEGLI ELETTRICISTI (se il problema fosse elettrico);
S. MARIA MADDALENA - PROTETTRICE DEGLI IDRAULICI (se il problema invece fosse... il tubo rotto);
S. PIETRO - PROTETTORE DEI PESCATORI (se la faccenda diventasse drammatica...);
aggiungo alla lista S. BERNARDA, perche’ a casa “mia” tutte le lavatrici si sono sempre chiamate cosi’ (Dovrei chiedere alla mia mamma il perche’).
Se nessuno dei sopraccitati santi vi viene in aiuto, invocate pure l’Idraulico...lo trovate sulle pagine gialle.
E veniamo a Fraser the Freezer, che sta sotto a Ridge the Fridge: forse per colpa della MSGP che tenta sempre di dondolarsi dallo sportello aperto, detto sportello e’ caduto. Che shock! per fortuna siamo riusciti a farlo restare chiuso mentre cercavamo il manuale di istruzioni...dopo due ore di fatica (con lo stress di vedersi sciogliere tutte le cibarie cosi’ tanto amorevolmente preparate...) Santo Masa ha reinstallato la porticina. Forse in questo caso il santo da invocare era S. Giuseppe carpentiere...il problema era infatti un CARDINE! Beh, insomma: santi o no, siamo sopravvissuti!

Desperate, I started calling out for the Good Lord, Sweet Jesus and Saint Mary…after all, I am catholic! Then I realized that the problem was very specific…one Holy Mary wasn’t enough…only Saint Plumber could answer my prayers, but I really didn’t want to spend 60 euros to get him out of his silly van and “have a look”. So I took out the “I poke my nose in it” hat, inherited by my “I do it myself” dad and set to work. I purged the water manually; open the filter (strange, it was clean) checked the little pump and tried to get Bernarda to start-up again. She complained a bit, but after a few “Sgrunt sgrunt” my old lady started working again, and the valve was turning as nothing had happened. But then I closed the filter, and Bernarda declared she wouldn’t work. Full stop. I chucked daddy’s hat and started searching for the “manual of saints” online. I really wanted to know what saint to pray under these circumstances…I found nothing. So I decided to ask my relatives: they are all in Italy, close enough to Vatican City…someone MUST know who is the saint in charge of washing machines! Nothing…silence..until, finally, I got an e-mail from my cousin (‘Cesco, you are the only one to take me seriously!). Meanwhile, Bernarda had started working again (I’ll never find out why she stopped in the first place)...but for all of you with washing machines in the house, here’s who to pray in case of troubles:
S. CHIARA (St. Claire from Assisi) – she protects washerwomen (in case you end up washing by hand)
S. COLOMBARO (can’t translate this one) – protects against floods (if the damage is bad...and water starts running)
S. LUCIA (St. Lucy)– protects electricians (in case of problems with the electric panel)
S. MARIA MADDALENA (St. Mary Magdalene) - protects plumbers (if a broken pipe is the problem)
S. PIETRO (St. Peter) – protects fishermen (if the problem is really bad and lasts for a long time, you might end up with a pond in your house…right?)
I decided to add to my own list S. BERNARDA, because that’s the name of all washing machines I met in my life (I should ask my mum why such name…maybe in another post)
If none of the abovementioned saints manages to help you and your dear old washing machine, then you really have to “invoke” the Plumber…you find him on the yellow pages.
Now, for Fraser the Freezer…he sits under Ridge the Fridge...we think that MFSJ might have used its open door as a swing once too many…when I reached for the freezer, the door FELL. Luckily we managed to “glue” it closed for a while…finally, after two hours of struggle and stress (seeing all my lovely food melting away was hart shrinking) St. Masa put the door back on.
Now I know: we had to pray St. Joseph, he was a carpenter and the problem with Fraser the Freezer was the bottom hinge!! Well, we survived…
