phone sales

e voi? come vi difendete dai venditori?

I'm still fuming...
now, there's something I really hate, and I know I am not alone here: people calling you at home to sell their product.
I am SO sorry that people have to do this job...I am especially sorry when they find me answering their call.
You have to know that Ma-Nu in japanese caracters does not have a pretty meaning...at its BEST it can be translated as "angry Devil". For those of you who are wondering: yes, I can be that. I mastered the art of brow-beating from a great master (my dad), and I spiced it up with some seriously strong ability at remembering "the exact words you used", thanks to my friend Il Cestode...(aha! you see: you did make it to my blog, in the end! I know you were jelaous of Mr HTML).
Be reassured: motherhood made the angry davil revert to it's angelic roots...until I get a phone call from those I mentioned above.
what do you do to protect yourself from phone-salesmen (and women)?

Here's a few suggestions:
1- My friend Miss Piriogi just doesn't pick up her phone anymore...she uses it only to phone, but if you want to talk to her, you call her mobile.
2- Then there's the one with the answering machine: rarely salesmen leave a message, they just hung up.
3- Most of you, I am sure, just hung up...why waste time? YOU ARE SO RIGHT!
4- You could do what Mrs BBC does...she engages in magnificent arguments with the poor bugger who happens to dial her number. I have been told these arguments are fantastic...but I haven't witnessed one yet.
5- You could (this I do, sometimes, to practice my dutch) let the person say all he has to say, then say "sorry, not inerested, have a nice day"...after all, they have to do this, it's their job, so let's be kind and wish them a good day.
6- You could (this is tricky) tell them that you find all this very interesting, and would like to know more and could they please send you a leaflet. Now...here it gets really interesting: in the Netherlands, 9 times out of 10, you will be asked for a few details to be entered into their database so that they can send you the leaflet. Very well, carry on. They don't ask you your address, but your BIRTH DATE. Now, why on Earth would I want to give out that information? it's personal, and God knows, could be used to access personal data (credit card details, anyone?). so then, you go back to compete with Mrs BBC, and may the best argument win.
Once I was told that they were not willing to send me any leaflet, because that would add too much costs to their campaign...my only reply was "then you are the one who is going to lose, 'cause you won't get me as customer". The guy was so angry and demanded to know how much my electricity bill was (you guessed right: it was one of those energy companies)...of course I didn't tell him, so he accused me (really! so indisponent!) of not wanting save money...I had to agree with him: every second he spent with me on the phone, was money his company was NOT making. That said, I hung up (no, I didn't wish him a good day...he was too rude)
7- but what happened to me just now is THE BEST: the poor guy misspelled my name. It happens,I know: I guess it's hard to spell a foregn name correctly. I also have problems sometimes and can't really make sensible sounds come out of my mouth...but this time, I had to laugh...it's an italian name...not even ONE confusing "chi" or "ghi"...I was also in a very very very bad mood, so in my perfect engl-iano I told him that if he wanted to TRY and sell something over the phone, he should at least practice the name of the potential client before actually dialling the number, and didn't he agree with me? yes, he agreed. well, good for him, I wished him a good day and hung up while he was still apologizing. I know, I was a bit harsh...the poor thing was SO humiliated he couldn't even speak anymore.
I wish I could call him back and ask him to tell me all about this fantastic product that he wanted to sell...but then I'm sure I would like to have a leaflet and he would ask me my birthdate...and Ireally don't want to mash him to a pulp...one scalding from Ma-Nu is enough, right?
and you? how do you defend yourself from phone-sales?
