Coming from a country that considers “premier league” only the religious wedding ceremony, relegating to the “conference national division” the civil ceremony, to finally discover that there are countries where the civil ceremony is as beautiful and felt as the church ones I am used to, it’s for me of great comfort for the future of Humanity.

M&F’s wedding was held here, in Kikkerland, in “my” town. And it was...a revelation!
The ceremony was presided over by a local civil authority, known as trouwambtenaar (Buitengewoon Ambtenaar van de Burgerlijke Stand, which I think might translate as “special civil officer” but I’ll ask to someone who indeed knows better the dutch language).
I guess depending on the size of the municipality the number of ambtenaar might change, here we have eight...so I guess you can choose! Two-three weeks before the ceremony, the ambtenaar and the couple meet to get to know each other, and in this occasion the ambtenaar can gather some information to make his/her speech more personal.
Here, like in Italy, the wedding must be celebrated in one of the municipal houses, which it’s not too bad when you can choose between a 1600 city hall, the old weighing house, or the old fort in the center of they city…
MFG and I were lucky! We were denied prime location on the Lake of Como, but ended up getting married in Verona, in the Museum of Afrescoes and we were lucky to have Yanello to translate from italian to Japanese! ‘cause having to listen to all of those clauses and sections made me SOOO sleepy! And double luck was on us, as we had Don Quixote waiting for us at his church…the religious ceremony was really special…
Oops, got sidetracked...let’s get back to M&F: they got married in the city hall…the trouwambtenaar welcomed us and invited us to stand to welcome the couple...as beautiful as only couples in love can be!!! The applause was certainly a better soundtrack than the wedding march for organ that was quacking out from quacking speakers....but it added character.
The couple sat down in front of the official’s desk, placed right in front of the beautiful oil painting representing the relief of Leiden (october 3, 1574). the speech started: the official had kind words for the parents of bride and groom, introduced the witnesses and explained how special their task was. She read a poem and told us a bit about M&F: how they met, how they moved to another country, how they decided to get married…I was in tears (but I was not the only one!!!)
It’s amazing: this person, the trouwambtenaar, has the most fascinating job: making someone’s special day unforgettable!
After the usual “will you take her as your wife, will you take him as your husband” type of question, they exchanged rings and kiss…another standing ovation with a very special soundtrack of applauses and sniffs.
That’s when I noticed the box of tissues tactically hidden under the book support of the officer: ah! I love this dutch practicality!!!
Signing the wedding certificate was done on a special stand, so as to give their moment of glory to the witnesses (and at the same time allowing the photographer to do a good job!!!)
At the end, we the guests left the couple and the parents behind for some special photos, and we waited for the couple, armed with the usual handful of rice, at the bottom of the stairs. Even the weather was clement: as cloudy as only kikkerland can be, but not a single drop of rain!
There would be so much to learn for Italians from such a ceremony...we are used to think that only a ceremony held in church is “the proper thing”…a mixture of romanticism and folklore where spirituality has little space (unless you are willing to invest in it…while a lot of people just FAKE it).
I am SO tempted to look into the CV of a trouwambtenaar…forget about the scientist-wannabe! I’d love to make someone’s wedding day super special!
What else can I say? Everytime I go to a wedding I want to...get married again! I wonder if MFJ would remarry me...here, in dutch, in front of a trouwambtenaar!

You do realise that you actually know one of these 'ambtenaars' in person, don't you? Our dear former colleague and the current 'stadsdeelvoorzitter' (so essentially the chairman of the borough) of my part of Amsterdam performs weddings! (Though personally I would be somewhat fearful of having him speech on my wedding day :-)) I'm sure he can tell you all about how to become one! And yes, your translation is pretty accurate.

I am coming too!!! When will it be???
I thought that if I got married I would do it at the Hortus Botanicus in Leiden.... A beautiful location and one with a high emotional value for me and MFD...

girls...I did marry a romantic...but it took him a while to agree to marry me again. I pocked him for a day, he finally said "let's wait for MFSJ to grow up and leave the house"...so, don't be fooled by 17 little words ;-)
if he does what he just promised, you'll be the first ones to know
