1610

october 16...a bit more than a month later. What a special day...good and bad at the same time.
AD 2000, a Monday: I took a leap in the dark and I landed in FlatLand, and I remember everything: emotions, excitements, fears...I remember people I met only that day and how I met people that are still in my life. I remember how worried I was when I left Italy, I was sure it was going to be only 6 months, I had butterflies in my stomach while I looked ahead of me, at this big upcoming adventure. I remember that when I arrived at the airport MrCoffee&Cigarette was there waiting for me...I remember my patched-up "inglisc" and the wind turbines seen from the car. I saw the windmill De Valk, (wow...they DO have windmills here, it's true) and little redbrick houses, canals, humongous flocks of bikes everywhere.

I remember my first room, and the sweet landlady, my eagerness to reach the lab, even if MrCoffee&Cigarette said to take it easy and settle in first. I remember my fisrt exploration of this town, my mission: to buy a phonecard (no, not a simcard...those were the days!) to call home. my first supermarket grocery bag, the fact that I was SO not hungry (of course! with that much adrenaline running through your veins, how can you think about FOOD?). I didn't resist, and although I got lost at least twice, I managed to reach the station...I wanted to go to the lab! I couldn't understand the bus system...I tried, but afer one hour of people telling me "not this bus, THAT one", I reached for my phonecard and called MrScientist. He came in no time, riding on this...shining pink girly bike that belonged to his girlfriend. it started to rain. MrScientist interpreted the timetable of the bus with the same easiness with which he still fits the most astonishingly logical mathematical models to his set of data (I still limit myself to a simple "fingercrossing", both for timetable interpretation and mathematical fittings...oh yes: in the latter case, I still call MrScientist!!)
I remember I was speechless when I saw that LABS HAD WINDOWS, I was so proud of my very personal squared meter of bench, near the fumehood next to the chemical cabinet.
Mr Scientist introduced me to everyone, showed me around then brought me back, by bus, to the station. He waited for me to get on the bus that would bring me home and made sure that I knew my way "do you remember your house?" "yes sure"...well, sure...it was lunchtime when I left it, it was now pitch black and raining and, let's be honest, I was on the phone with the Italic Cestode...after a while I was the only passenger on the bus and the driver kept looking at me through the rear-view mirror. I told him I was lost. He asked for my address, turned the bus, brought me to the right bus-stop and told me "walk straight from here". I guess I didn't go very straight, because I just couldn't find my house. In the end, an old lady who was walking her two dogs decided to walk me all the way to my front door.

Year after year, these lovely memories got a bit contaminated and the "commemoration" is not always a happy one. october 16 is the day of disillusions, anger and sadness for what could have been and is not. october 16 is the day my life changed with my relatives, neighbors and friends beginning not undertand me quite so well anymore.

Luckily the other 364 days of the year are full of amazing memories...and this year I was too busy keeping MFSJ quiet on the plane (remember? my Japanese pilgrimage?) to even remember what october 16 was all about...
and after all, october 16 is the day I met MrScientist AND discovered that the Netherlands is a country FULL of windmills, real working windmills!!!

going bananas

You all know it: “going bananas” about something means being crazy about it, like an ape in front of a bunch of bananas…well, our recent trip to the Land of the Rising Sun carrying around MFSJ started with problem number one: having asked the grandparents for three things (bedroom ready, ingredients for spaghetti al pomodoro for MFSJ first lunch there and bananas for MFSJ breakfast) the worried answer was: there’s a bananas shortage. I didn’t believe it, but it was TRUE! Read more

Since march 2008, Japanese go bananas about bananas...shelves in supermarkets are runsacked, emptied, leaving only a couple of lonely stickers to attest the presence of the yellow fruits when the shop opened. No bananas in the shops...and if you could find some, you were allowed only four ( question: why would you need more than four?). Luckily MFSJ converted to the god of fish sausages for breakfast, leaving the banana to her grandma, who is now totally converted to the Banana Diet Goddess. There are many versions of this diet, so I was told, but for me the result was the same: empty shelves!
So, while farmers and scientists are engaged in a worldwide epic war with the fungus Micosphaerella fijiensis (black sigatoka) and the worm Radopholus similes, a war where only powerful chemicals seem to work, a plague of dieters is now threatening the survival of the golden fruit. New followers are now present in USA, and the news of this diet reached Italy...my recent studies on hom-made fish sausages will prove very useful for our half-japanese-not-so-crazy household.

Work

OH MY GOD! Is it true? I’m gonna post something about work?! No, not really…but I know you are all waiting to hear about our trip to Japan, since the jet-lag MUST be well over by now.

Do you believe me if I tell you that I started crocheting again?
My crafts baskets raises from the dust behind the living room courtains only in two occasions: one, tha preparation of omiyage; two, MFSJ is sick. Now, think about it: omiyage-time is over, so it must be that MFSJ was sick, right? Right. She had that classical type of fever that only incubator-mum can cure.

Incubator-mum is that amazing being able to cuddle you and comfort you by wrapping you up in her own sweater…fruit juices, mandarin segments, pieces of bread with jam, water in a glass with sipping straw, warm tea, cold tea, barley tea japanese-style…all piles up on the coffee table in the living room, and the only thing that MFSJ wants is incubator-mum and the DVD of Kiki’s delivery services. Oh yes…Totoro has been forgotten, in favour of the little witch, and her black cat, on the flying broom.
So, while on duty, the incubator-mum made two amigumuri (see the picture, and the size of the 1 euro coin on the left!): my own interpretation of Garfield the cat, which MFSJ declared kawaii, and a japanese-style octopus that was IMMEDIATELY adopted by MFJ (yes, not MFSJ...she didn't even see it!).
But that’s not all! Prof B. was in town. Well yes…one of the most beautiful brains I ever encountered in my short career as wannabe-(and failed, let’s face it)-scientist, the one that 8 years ago pointed his finger towards Holland, thinking that I was most likely to go back…HE was here. Ten minutes of hieroglifics (the type that I tend to rever as oracle’s precious answers to all my scientific questions) and my four neurons were already in overolad. I survived…until he said the usual magic little words “just prepare the sample and we analyse it”. I would have now the perfect answer for him : “salta macaco” (jumps the macaque). I learnt it from the Cestode: schicia il boton e salta macaco" e` un classico degli informatici veneti... Indica quando l'utente pensa che fare un programma sia una cosa semplice semplice, so, apparently, programmers from the italian region Veneto use this amusing expression to indicate when they are dealing with a client who thinks that compiling a program is as easy as just pushing a botton (push the botton and jumps the macaque).
Bottom line is…the macaque here will have to jump aroud the fermentor once more…crochet-missions and MFSJ allowing ;-)
