oh, I love this painting...
the little girl at the center got as a present a figurine representing John the Baptist (poor girl...thanks God the world moved on) and seems all happy, while the boy on the left probably got what he deserved in his shoe: nothing!...clear sign that he was oh-so-naughty this year. oh boy: why didn't you try harder? if you were REALLY naughty you would have got a free ride for Spain...I don't know how you would have come back, but hey! it's SPAIN!!!

sorry...coming back to the paining...special breads are all collected in the basket: I can recognize a luikse wafel, something like a galette, maybe a speculaas, for sure a gevulde speculaas, while the brick-like “thing” is a sort of ontbijtkoek called hylickmaker. The huge kite-like bread on the right is a duivekater...mhmm...I bet the Culinary missionary would love to start experimenting...
There are then three figures, in the shadow of the hearth, they are looking up towards the chimney...because HE came down from there!!!...amazing details, and SO MUCH MORE LIGHT than the paintings by Mr Rembrant, a contemporary of Mr Jan Steen, both born in Leiden...but I SO much prefer this painting to the Nightwatch!!!
Anyway: yes...it's that time of the year again...newspapers anticipated his imminent arrival, reporters excitedly explained how his steamboat finally reached Holland...Sinterklaas has arrived. I am sure he has his very own "huis" in every major city, 'cause he is staying in Leiden too!
Chocolate letters can be bought in every store (so it would be really mean of Sint to forget YOU), pepernoten and kruidnoten can be munched at the kassa of every shop, where you can also buy them by the bucketload...
the Sinterklaas feest at daycare will surely be nice for MFSJ...hope she doesn't get too shy...but this year, after many years in which we managed to avoid the celebration among adults, I gave in: we are going to our neighbors...I'm sure it will be lovely, but oh boy...while the kids will get DECENT presents (a very special Piet will bring them, all wrapped with care and love by mum and dad), the adults will have to swap funny wrappings containing the most silly-kitsch-useless object you can think of...
me, ever-so-practical, don't know where to start...help, anyone?
my collegue here suggested a banana-case, but in my opinion it doesn't fall into the "useless" category...just a bit on the kitschy-side. but definetely useful if you have a kid who throws her bag around...with a banana inside...ok, I know: that was the mother talking ;-)
a plasticky inflatable christmas tree? you never know...someone might like that type of decoration...
a real-size porcelain Rudolf the reindeer? I even know where one could buy such a thing...
a jigsaw puzzle with one missing piece? (Mean!)
ONE shoe...to be used as recipient for next year presents from Sinterklaas?
HEEELP! we need TWO presents (one "from" me and one "from" MFSJ)...LET ME KNOW!

oh, Manu!

I must say, as a Dutch person with many years of Sinterklaas experience I am baffled by this assignment... why do you have to buy something USELESS? That's not the tradition I know. In my house you were perfectly entitled to get useful and nice presents (though we haven't celebrated it for quite some time now).

If you insist though I am sure you can find pretty useless things at the cooking shop. I never saw the point of a melon ball spoon for instance. Or how about that silly plastic tube that is supposed to help you peel garlic? Useless if I ever saw anything! :-) Let us know what it turns out to be.

I don't know about this "useless" issue...maybe they just want it to be hilarious? Thyra: the melon scoop IS GREAT!!! I SO want sinterklaas to get me one of those!!!

ANd how about a jar of pepper wrapped in a paper with musical notes printed on? (pepernoten!)

If you want to make it also a bit nicer, you can buy the more fancy pepper mill... at IKEA it's only 6,50 I think!

If you go to the Xenos, i'm sure you'll find cheap, funny and useless things! A lot of them!!

(magari scrivendo Buona Pasqua...o altre festività fuori stagione ah ah ...)
see you

Neli...I have to say taht the "pepernoten" idea is FANTASTIC...
'Cesco: bello! gli auguri fuori stagione garantiscono l'effetto comico! bello!

after snooping around shops and such...I think I found at least ONE silly present: but i am keeping it a secret, 'cause there are a couple of moles among my readers ;-)

I like all of your ideas...keep them coming! I might actually USE THEM ALL!
