Hup Hup Holland 3: Draaiorgeldag

After Polderdag and Pannenkoekendag…what else is there to cheer “hup hup Holland” once more? Of course…the draairogeldag…may3, 2008: 10th street-organ day, held in Leiden, of all places!

Who knew we would be blessed by the sound of more than 80 organs, playing all at once? MFSJ was over the moon and clapped her little hands at every performance given by one of these sound-monsters placed along the street. They came from all around the Netherlands, big and small. I’m sure my favourite Don Abbondio, aka Don Mario, would have been horrified to discover that the biggest sound-monsters were placed inside the Hooglandse Kerk….I was so happy! I never have time to snoop around one of these marvels of mechanics…I’m a busy mom, remember? But this time I could inspect a few of them while they were not playing (good for my ears). The mechanics resembles the “classic” church organ: there’s a wind-chest (hope the name is right) and various ranks of pipes. There’s no keyboard and the “player” is a roll of perforated paper. There are things that are no longer incorporated in pipe-organs (pity) like drums, xylophones, bells…the mechanic is embellished by some special female figurines playing graciously the drums on the front panel. Sometimes you can find a fake chimpanzee turning the wheel. The bellows get pressure from a compressor, but it’s not unusual to find ones still pumped by hand, using a wheel.
The pipes are mainly wood, and tend to be capped (to lower the pitch of the sound, right?)
The repertoire is infinite: the draaiorgel industry seems to be still flourishing! I don’t know how “caliente” it can be to dance the lambada played by a street organ...but it is POSSIBLE.
The video is NOT for the faint-hearted or those with delicate musical tastes….it’s an umbearable cacophony! But you get the idea…
I am not going crazy…I still like good music and traditional church organs….so much so that I am seriously considering the adoption of one of the pipes of the English Cathedral Organ they intend to build in the Hooglandse kerk…God knows where I’ll be by the time they finish building it!

can't say i share your passion for 'draaiorgels' but if you are really a fan perhps you should take MFSJ here: http://www.museumspeelklok.nl/. I vaguely remember going there as a kid with my grandparents myself.

that museum is fantastic! I took my parents and brother there...we all loved it. I am waiting for Corinna to be a bit older...too many delicate things on display! Her little hands have a tendency for disaster ;-)
