Diciamo ciao a persone fantastiche!

The title of the post is the message that went together with the little presents we dropped in the baskets of the other kids in the "duikelaars" group at the daycare. It was Corinna's last day there and I write it with (I admit it) tears in my eyes. My little one passed with full marks and from Wednesday is offically a Rakker.
We say goodbye to wonderful people! Ditta, youg grandma who managed to win over grandma Gabriella despite the language barrier. Chantal, modern mum, who shows me every day that being mum of twins and keeping up a job like that is not so bad after all. Karin, who is a master in cuddling kids. She opens her arms, and they all toddle towards her: Daniel starts climbing her leg, Corinna gets to her lap first, Elena looks up with her naugty smile. I don’t know who learnt more in these months: me or my daughter? I wouldn’t be able to tell.
BUT the new group is great. There is so much space to play. So much light. They have small tables with mini-benches for their lunches, snacks and activities. There is a special table for craft activities, an area with cushions for a bit of relax or for reading a book, they have a special mat for building blocks and train sets. There is a special sleeping room, each child has his/her bed, and there is, finally, the cleaning room: special for changing nappies or using the toilet (there is a cute toilet behind doors, for shy kids...)
The garden, renovated last year, is fantastic. Last but not least:the carers, Manon and Marianne, are really good.

So, what is it with these silly tears?!
Little women grow up: Hurray!

PS: I'm told that "rakkers" means rascals...well, I think it's a really fitting name: Corinna is definetly a Rakker!

Elezioni

Silenzio.

The JA-NEE sticker didn’t work…our mail box got clogged with mountains of shiny, plastic-wrapped paper, addressed to me. I’m horrified when I see that the senders are nothing less than Mr Berlusconi, Mr Veltroni and some less known politicians with their adepts…pardon, candidates. Elections are getting close and Mr Gerlusconi knew I was an Italian living abroad and felt obliged to inform me on his initiatives.
It goes without saying that all of that rubbish was disposed of: plastic in the bin, paper in the special paper-collector…this, despite My Favourite Japanese’s shy offers “don’t you want to keep them?” Let’s leave it.
Finally, on march 28 I get the BIG scaryenvelope, the one to remind me of my duties and rights as Italian. It contains:
-instructions
-maxi envelope, stamp not necessary, to return my vote
-voting certificate, to cut along the marked line: half goes back in the maxi envelope, the other one is for me and certifies that I voted.
-mini envelope, containing the two folded ballot papers on which I have to write my vote. The napkins must be folded back correctly and placed into the mini envelope, which goes into the maxi envelope.
-two sheets of paper with the lists and symbols of all parties, including the names of the candidates.
Ah…the joys of a life “lost in translation”!!! My Favourite Japanese, after carefully studying the papers, says “this looks like the advertisement for washing powder for colours”. Silence. “eh?” quick look at the symbol of “sinistra arcobaleno”…actually, with all those colours, he is not far off. “this looks like the tag on a bottle of olive oil” (Partito Democratico) “this could be the symbol for Italian athletes competing at the Olimpic Games” (Fiamma Tricolore). “and this…isn’t it the symbol of that brand of mineral water…?” (Italia dei valori…which to my favourite Japanese looks like san Benedetto Water).
He’s on a roll…UDC reminds him of the Crusades, “l’altra sicilia” is perfect for a brand of Pasta or bittersweet almond cookies, Boselli is definetly the sticker of some high-quality ham (possibly bresaola, because according to him it has the same colour).
“What about this?” I ask, indicatind Valori e Futuro (noble candidate: emanuele Filiberto di Savoia…). Silence. No ideas. Then: it’s the pin of a Yacht club (“navy” sea, blue sky, that little knot in the middle…). We decide that also Berlusconi’s must be the pin of a yacht club, but one that has seen better days, old and faded…a bit passe’, for fake veterans.
We cannot think of anything for “sinistra critica”…if anyone has suggestions…

Lucky me I vote via mail…so I am free after april 3, last valid day to send the vote, which must arrive at the Consulate BEFORE april 10 at 16hours, as stated in the instructions. Goes without saying that I am stuck among food brands, washing powders, mineral waters and exclusive clubs…I really don’t know who to vote.

Ah…I almost forgot: the JA-NEE sticker is placed on the mailboxes of people who would like to receive the local newspapers but NOT advertisements, unless this carries our name, surname and address. At least in this the consulate was really efficient: it gave my name and address to all the candidates!!!

Sferruzzare

Cast on 17 stitches.
Row 1(WS): Knit all stitches.
Row 2(RS): K2, *K1B, K1,* repeat between * to last stitch, K1.
Row 3: Knit all stitches.
Row 4: *K1, K1B,* repeat between * to last stitch, K1.

Si chiama “twisted moss with a single garter stitch edge”
...come lo traduco? Muschio attorcigliato, con bordo a singolo punto legaccio? Boh.

-=-=-=-
Oh dear…I knew I wouldn’t last long: second post of my life and here I am, translating yet again! It’s the story of my life, really…since I met Masa and decided to bring him to Italy I have been switching from Italian to English while talking about the strangest of topics…
Yes, in my previous post I did promise to write only in Italian, but let’s face it: none of my relatives seems to have noticed, and I have to ask my brother to teach my mum to read a blog…so it might take a while.
Plus a dear-dear-dear friend of mine is trying to learn Italian and I am so full of myself to think that I can help her by writing this “thing” in Italian (for myself) and in English (for her, but also for the rest of my lovely big bunch of international friends). To keep matters simple (haha!), I won’t translate LITERALLY! I know, it means that Marj will get a bit confused, but I am just not good enough! So, here it goes…

Well, yes…not so much of a scientist after all!
Your dear Manu, after failing to crochet (it all gets curled up!!!) decided to change challenge: KNITTING!
Ah, the joys of knitting! I started last week, after falling in love with this fidget…I couldn’ t resist! It EVEN had instructions.

INSTRUCTIONS?!!
Have you ever read through a knitting or crochet pattern? You need a PhD in Cryptology and Coding Theory, and then add a fair amount of poetry…
a little thing written like this
Cast on 17 stitches.
Row 1(WS): Knit all stitches.
Row 2(RS): K2, *K1B, K1,* repeat between * to last stitch, K1.
Row 3: Knit all stitches.
Row 4: *K1, K1B,* repeat between * to last stitch, K1.

Is called “twisted moss with a single garter stitch edge”

Now, how romantic is that?! They lure you with lovely, romantic, charming names…I was already dreaming DH with his twisted moss scarflet…nice and cozy, armed to fight off throat aches and colds…my little snuggle bunny kept warm in the garden at the daycare…then I read the instructions and I got scared!
long lists of K1 and K2: sounds more like enzyme kinetics to me! K1B? Is it an inhibition constant? Competitive or non-competitive?
My grandma was no enzymologist…yet she could handle 4 needles with the precision of a surgeon, concentrated, the little paper in fron of her and her beautiful work in her hands. Even as a little child I knew that there were TIMES when it was better to let her alone. Oh, she would have talked to you, being the sweet grandma she was, but she would have paid a high price for her kindness…possibly she would have had to sacrifice half a row or more, check again the pattern…then a little scratching of her forehead, a bit of extra concentration ad the soft tic-tic of the needles was there again, the yarn flying around the needles as if handled by a fairy…so many memories!
So, with a vivid picture of THAT Corinna in my head, I heaved my very own Corinna onto the back seat of the bike (it was freezing cold) and I cycled to the city center. I had seen already a certain yarn (80% acrylic, this skein doesn’t even know what a sheep looks like!), even found a pair of knitting needles to match (apparently you can just check on the little paper that comes with the skein!)

What can I say? I’m at scarflet number 3. I gave up on the romantic twisted moss, I’m using what my mum identified as “roersini stitch” (“roesrini is the dialect word for the stitch used for the borders…garter stitch? Ribbing? ).
The whole family is now fitted with pseudo-fidgets made with a simple “K1P1 throughout” (is it called ribbing? Because with all of this switching from Italian to English I get a bit confused!). Might not be as evocative as the twisted moss, but it keeps us warm.
They are so nice! Mrs anaconda no more! I hated those long scarves that you need to wrap around 7 times….my pseudo-fidget is 60cm or so, just enough to cross on the front where it’s kept closed by three buttons.
It’s now the end of March, but seen the snow of second Easter day, my passion for knitting has been a blessing!
I knit, and I think about my grandma…she had a special belt, made by her, to hold the right-hand needle. She used thin double pointed needles, many of them together…and made masterpieces, including a certain model of socks which I hated all my childhood. They were thin, embroidered and tight. They left the mark of the embroidery on your skin when you took them off. So painful! BUT, since I became mum I find them irresistible. They look lovely, I have two pairs of them in Corinna’s wardrobe, made by a good friend of my grandma. Will I ever make MY Corinna wear them? No way! She’ll probably hate me in the future for letting her wear only soft elastic cotton and no fancy hand-made TIIIGHT socks…I can live with that.
My needles, on the contrary, are 7mm in diameter. My childhood friend Chiara and I used very similar needles as fencing weapons, trying to imitate “Lady Oscar”. And I still haven’t made a special belt, I use the belt on my trousers to hold the right needle. I don’t think I’ll ever manage to hold more than two BIG needles, and the twisted moss will always elude me (K1B is NOT "knit in the back loop", apparently, but a "knit in the loop below"…something no YouTube movie will ever help in clarifying)…nonetheless, I love knitting.
So now you know what you’ll get for Xmas (unless I find the man that taught “woodcarving and wood toy making” at the VolksUniversiteit…)

Carta, penna e calamaio
