Elettricista

Meglio andare con in campione, no?

It's now a few months that our HORRID electric cooker is misbehaving: it's impossible to regulate the heat it produces. the resistances go red and then purple so much is the energy wasted...and when it managed to burn my super-tasty long beans in 30 seconds flat...I couldn't hold it anymore. I became the same colour of those crazy resistances. MFJ saw the thinderstorm coming...and looked for shelter: he took me to the DIY store and we bought a brand new electric cooker. Mission accomplished! or so we thought. Silly me: the cooker came without cable...and now?

No one had time to come and install this scary black glass-ceramic thing for us...I had to come up with something. I studied those useless instructions they give you (a couple of pages about how to connect the cooker to the power supply) and I started to take apart the old cooker to get the cable: not that I wanted to save money, but I had absolutely no clue what to tell to the shop keeper, so I thought I'd bring the sample. Then I thought...well, I got all the way to dismantling this...maybe I can connect this thumb-thick cable after all...I'll call DIM. His genius is semi-infective and I did stay close to him for a couple of weeks (thanks to the holidays) so maybe I still have a few DIY germs in my system. DIM has an itchy brain...you just need to tickle him a bit. He demanded to see the schemes, which I promptly sent via internet. Three videoconferences and two phonecalls later I was ready to go...now, I wouldn't be able to describe technically and with the right terminology what I did...but here's what I did, in layman terms: we smashed the back of the kitchen cabinet to access the socket, took said socket apart, took the plug apart. I found out that 5 little cables were coming out of the socket: two brown, two blue and one yellow-green. Now, I am crap at describing it...and DIM would cringe, but he doesn't read my blog so I am safe...browns bring current, blues "drain it" (so the circuit can circulate, right?) and yellow-green is the earth. The little night-light that we use for MFSJ was plugged between each blue-brown combination to see which one belonged to which, then I studied the plug (5 cables again, but listen to this: one brown, one blue, two black and one yellow-green)...and connected it.
I am sure I scared MFJ, but he learnt already a while ago that when I am mumbling with his father in law he better keep out of the way: IN US HE TRUSTS...and he does what he is told.
Result? since last sunday we have a brand new cooker.
super shiny AND working.
DIM approved with a *sgrunt* followed by these most encouraging words: let's home it doesn't blow up your house", but I think he was quite proud.

parole parole parole

...and we are back on the rss train...
After the summer holidays, here I am, ready to tiptoe on the keyboard searching for the right word... and I did promise you some essential dutch estate agency notions, right? so here we go...

woning: house
eengezinwoning: one-family house
tussenwoning: one of those houses in a row, as long as it's not at the end of the row, in which case it's called hoekwoning (corner house)
bovenwoning e benedenwoning : imagine a house on two floors with loft and garden. Place two doors on the ground floor, one takes you to the rooms of that same floor, the other one gives you access to the steeptest of stairs which lead to the apartment on the first floor, the one with the loft. to make it clear: those living on the ground floor benefit from the garden view but get lots of noisy hoofed creatured walking on their heads. Those living on the first floor enjoy the view of the garden in which they can't set foot, but can use that same foot (possibly hoofed, for more immpact) to dance the samba on the heads of those lucky ones;
uitbouwen : extension of the house...generally it accomodates the kitchen, or the bathroom, or both. Very frequently you can observe how recidive the uitbowing operation can be: it's not unusual to see gardens swamped with uitbows of uitbouws of uitbouws...you stop once the garden is totally covered.
dakkapel: it's the uitbouw for the bovenwoning...since you have no garden, you poke a hole in the roof, straighten the walls, and you get a dormer window...which can be as large as the whole house.
And for now I better stop, I think I got you confused enough (and be grateful that I haven't included how to pronounce those swear-like words!)

house hunting

...and finally MFJ took the big step. No no: we are not talking about proposing...that happened quite a while ago. We are talking brick and mortar...we want to buy a house. Not for the faint hearted, seen the different cultural backgorunds, the opposite tastes in many things, our financial situation and, last but not least, the tiny tyrant who is ruling our lives since three years ago.

Wwe stepped into the world of househunting in a...how shall I put it...cowboy style: almost all the houses on sale through an agent are listed on a national website, you can choose location, characteristics, price, and the search engine generates a list of results. These results include pictures and some technical information. My cowgirl approach meant that I simply took the phone and contact all those estate agents with houses on sale. not any house, of course, but those with a price that we could afford, a price calculated by our Hypotheek adviseur (financial agent who knows your situation inside-out and mediates between you and the banks trying to find the best mortgage solution, with all the necessary guarantees). To keep up this "cowgirl" theme, let me just say that after handing the phone I jumped on my two-wheeled jade (my faithful bike...fiets for those who fancy learning dutch)...heading not towards the sunset but towards said little mansions.
but let's face it...we are foreign cowboys, and it's already not easy to understand how things work here...we are not brick experts: we just tend to look at the aesthetic of it! Enter the personal makelaar. your very own estate agent (broker), different from the seller's one so as not to get caught up in some conflict of interests.
Oooooooooh, my technical dutch is getting better and better. never mind the pages of the novel and chit-chatting about breastfeeding! Our makelaar is a bottomless well of informations, from nederlandic traditions to the name of a specific type of bathroom tyles. he's a lot of fun, and our true hero: he accepted the challenge of finding a dutch house for an italian married to a japanese, dealing only in english...not bad, huh?

Disinformazione

Today I read an interesting piece written by Yoani Sánchez for Internazionale...I looked for the translation on her website, but since I haven't found it I'll attempt it myself...because although Yoani lives in Cuba, some things she says remind me of a certain other country, this side of the ocean...

Every morning, at 6.30, I have breakfast while watching the news on the cuban TV. then, around 9am, an old pensionate-who buys newspapers to resell them- brings me a copy of the newspaper Grandma. In the evening I have alook at the national new. at the end of the day, I am well informed on everything that our government authorized for publication. but it's not enough for me. I need to know what they are not telling me. Luckily there are parallel sources of information. One is my friend Manolo, whose aunt installed (illegally) an antenna-dish on the terrace of her house. she records programs broadcast in Mexico, copies them and sells them at a price that allows her to live even without an "official" job.
Then I get articles and reportages, smuggled by a relative of mine who works shifts at the internet room of a european embassy. From there he can see what got published on all the websites blocked by the national connections. If, by chance, I can't get my fix of news through these "regular" channels, I can always rely on LOLA, specialized in "chatterology", who claims to be able to guess what was discussed in the latest meeting of the Máxima Instancia.
I do realize, though, that keeping informed is a bit like a desease, the syntoms of which comprise an everlasting irritability, paranoic distrust and the feeling of being one of the few still wide awake in a world full of sleepwalkers.
Sometimes I pity (or envy) the optimism of those who read only the trumphant headlineson the future of the country. I can't stop worrying about the affection that many show for the national press (doling news out in dribs and drabs) and for a take on facts that has nothing to do with reality.
