Love is in the air...

actually, not really in the air...but hanging from our pergola. Our garden has always been a hot spot for bird watching, but both birdhouses remained sadle mepty this year (while our amazing neighbor Linda could take care of a family of coal tits).
But... we do have a couple who constantly visits us: two big fat blackbirds, so neat that they decided to clean the gutter of the roof of the garden shed (good for me, so I didn’t need to climb it with the ladder). But...to closer observation, Mr and Mrs Merlo didn’t travel too far with their bounty of twigs and moss. So I had a good look, and guess what? they didn’t even fly two meters! Their nest is on the pergola in front of our kitchen! I couldn’t see it before because GH is obsessed with courtains and those in the kitchen were the first to be intstalled...
we are a bit worried.
the canopy offered by grapevine leaves is not really watertight...and here it keeps raining really hard! and, in your honest opinion, does this nest hold?
Anyway: I can’t wait to tell the neighbor that we were also chosen as godparents for a nestful of feathery babies!!! Especially because this afternoon I just noticed the tail of Mrs Merlo sticking out of the nest!!! Aw...motherhood!

birds...and other creatures

I would never have thought to turn into a bird-watcher...and I’m sure one of my former colleagues would be damn pleased! Gosh...there I was, thinking that he was W.E.I.R.D. and look where I am now: ecstatic because yet another specimen of feathered-winged-creature has landed in my garden.

Since we bought our very own piece of Holland, my favourite activity is to sit at the window and...look outside. The previous owner gave MFSJ the perfect present: this old school poster with domestic birds on it (ok, names are in dutch, but we are in the google-era, knowledge is a few tappings on the keyboard away...). Just place a bird feeder at the garden gate (far away from your window) and you are ready to go.
...We had robins in the snow at Xmas
...there’s plenty of blackbirds (and they are FAT from all the bread they get to nick)
...a noisy clan of sparrows, with its rival clan of “kwikstaart” (which I think translates into wagtail)
...a big jay which favours the roof of the garden shed
...one or two magpies (oh, they are cute! called gazza ladra in Italian)
...one collared dove (colomba dal collare)
the list goes on, and so does our (my) fun.
We have no big trees in our stamp-sized piece of Holland, so the little birdies do feel a bit exposed, favouring the apple tree of the neighbor. But I am the proud owner of a honeysuckle, so I just have to wait for fruit season. And MFSJ decided NOT to eat the crust of her sandwich, so she brings home PLENTY of leftovers (blackbirds are really good at soaking them into the pond).

You might also like to know (or maybe not, but then just stop reading) that our two goldfishes are doing well. They live in the wooden barrel which collects water from the roof of the garden shed, and they are there to eat mosquito eggs. I know...it doesn’t really make sense to have a water barrel in our garden: it’s ALWAYS wet anyway...but there are one or two days of “hot” summer when the pond goes a bit below level, so we can use the water from the barrel to refill.
...and yes, I’m also quite eager to see the salamanders in the pond after the winter.

And thanks to my amazing origami skills, we get to see birds even at night: look at those paper cranes hanging from the window!

Scherzi a parte: buon viaggio amore mio, torna vincitore.

From last night MFSJ and me are alone: MFG goes back to the Land of the Rising Sun for a couple of weeks. Businness trip, lucky him! For the occasion, the POOR soul will have to wear suit and tie...this SO not fair! He goes around Japan all dressed up and I can't even enjoy the view! Last time I saw him wearing a suit was when we got married!

Preparations started well in advance: the ticket was not yet booked. GH was hired as fashionista and Practicality Guru. Long videoconferences (aka "skypeing") aided our team of experts in their task: weather forecast checked, lists of what-is-needed, what-we-have, what-we-need. The trip to Italy around Xmas was named "holiday", yes...and indeed we *refurbished* our spirit and filled our stomachs, but we also made our walled fetherlight! We found a jacket which looked SO good, but SO good, that it was a pity to see him take it off. I would say he should wear it even as payama, although it might ruin the shape.
A true Prince Charming...who, instead of brandishing The Sword of Truth protected by the shield of Virtue, he'll wear the Armour of Professionality (the suit) holding the Banner of Confidence (the tie). Thinking about it...as Prince charming in Sleeping Beauty, MY prince was also helped by three pixies: MFSJ, GH and wife.
Wife who, after a month of preparations, can add yet another line to her CV:
after having agreed on a traveling wardrobe, checked all the pro-businness souvenirs, supervised all the packing possibilities for hand luggage and checked-in luggage (I'm the master of 3D tetris!!), having listed all approved combinations for jacket-shirt-tie and socks-shoe-belt, having improvised a workshop on "the windsor style of tie-knotting"...I think I'd have a permanent position at ESTEC to make sure the astronauts don't leave their toohbrush behind! I check everything...I'm starting to think that MFJ didn't leave: he run away in exasperation!
Enough of joking: have a safe trip my love. And don't you dare stay there, because I'll be there in a sec to take you back!

Non so ancora cosa porteremo in dono: stroopwafels (bbboni come l'oro), formaggio (puzza come l'incenso) e tulipani?

I better write this also in english: the most beautiful belly in the world...is not mine, but it carries MY present...or so I like to tell people. The most beautiful belly in the world belongs to my cousin, THE cousin: MFSJ says there's a "bebi" in it. Due date is the day after my birthday, but all parties agreed to deliver one day early, so I can get my present on my birthday. To be honest, though, I don't mind post-poning (or pre-poning...can you say pre-poning?) celebrations for a good result!

We promise a visit in true "three kings" style: a migrant japanese, a small adoptive nederlandic, a migrant italian. a comet-call (can't see stars up here!) will be our sign that it's time to start our pilgrimage and instead of camels, we'll use motorized tin-birds. We still don't know what to carry as present: Stroopwafels (as good as gold!), cheese (stinks like incent) and tulips?

My very first dutch literature experience! this, if compared to other wordly trainings, is the marathon of the snails...but I'm already on page 24
read more

I have to carry not one but two books AND one tiny pencil: like the good picky and perfectionist student that I am, I tend to mark all the words that I don't know and faithfully look them all up on the dictionary. To say that those first 24 pages are all scribbled is an understatement.
But MFJ is happy...the slow reading combined with my enthusiasm with every new discovery (new word, idiom...sometimes I cna even get the joke!) means that I have this unbearable urge to share my knowledge...result? With no effort on his part, HE is also at page 24...maybe this time he won't need to wait for themovie to come out...
but this is very unkind of me: HE finally found the title of the book I was so eager to read...and got it for me.
So...this is truly a team effort, I feel a "LOVE IS..." cartoon coming up!

labrats

this one is for all the people with whom I shared lab-time.
The original list comes from here...I deleted a few things…

You know you're a lab rat when:

1. You open the toothpaste with one hand
Depends on the toothpaste! When I started here I did keep a falcon (see number 18) in the pocket of my jacket so I could practice…
2. When you hear tween, you think of the surfactant not the age group.
I immediately thought that next to the tween bottle we have the tritonX100, does that count?
3. For you, media is something which increases your culture.
What else? Oh…I see…newspapers, radio, TV? Those are no good for my Streptomyces, sorry…
4. You have a callus on your thumb.
Worse: I wanted to use a pipette to apply slip to my ceramic pot (never told you that, Marj: sorry! Those brushes are really difficult to hold!)
5. You use the word "aliquot" in regular sentences.
Why, don’t you?
6. Sometimes you momentarily vanish from social activities because of a timepoint.
I vanish for entire weeks
7. You've never worn a clean lab coat.
Why would I?
8. You say "orders of magnitude" in regular sentences.
Guilty
9. You flinch when you hear the word "significant".
Yes…especially now that I am looking at my data…
10. You're very good at diluting things.
yes
11. You're also very good at transferring small amounts of liquid between containers.
Only with the right tools
12. You are fed up of people saying alcohol, when they mean ethanol.
Absolutely!
13. You hear the word ‘Molar’ and teeth are the last thing on your mind.
yes
14. You say "mills" and "megs".
Oh yeah…and megs-per-mill too!
15. No-one in your family has any idea what you do.
I also have no idea what my relatives do…they never tell me! They are too busy reading out their blood test results to me…
16. You can make a short film in power point.
At some point there was a secret competition going on during those useless work discussions
17. You consider a green laser pointer to be science bling.
Can you have it GREEN?! Mine is red…
18. A falcon is not a bird....And you have 5 of them with different types of water.
“types of water”? no, in my case is different buffers, different solutions, different pH…
19. When your fruits go bad and you get fruit flies, you can't help but check their eye colour
Yes…but I am not alone in this one: MFJ does it too!
20. You've suffered carpal tunnel from the pipetman.
No, but I get pneumonia after each protein prep, and my back is sore after carrying all of that weight into the cold room.
21. A timer clipped to the hip is not only practical, but dead sexy.
Depends who wears it ;-)
22. You've played Battleship using tip boxes.
No, but I made a very frashionable handbag with those tip-racks
23. The front pages of Science is your light reading.
Actually, Nature-Methods
24. You think the following is a quality insult: "I've seen cells more competent than you!".
I’ll add it to my list…it’s awsome
25. You're looking for a cooking book by maniatis.
how about a collection of protocols by Delia Smith?
26. You've used, "I'd like to get into your genes" as a pickup line.
No…but I’ll leave this one as a suggestion for the nerdy ones
27. You've made dry ice grenades
28. You've lost many friends to ice grenades...
No…can anyone explain? Might be useful
29. You pick fights with quacks and creationists :)
Yes…but they are a stubborn bunch
30. you read this list to see how many applied to you.
I lost count
31. You need an electronic security card to move between floors
I nick my husbands’
32. Your computer is worth more than your car
No car…
33. You wonder how many g's set your washing machine to before doing laundry.
Yes, and get stuck ‘cause I don’t know the specifics of the rotor and cannot
convert the rpm

34. you check the meniscus when measuring liquids in the kitchen
sometimes…
35. You want to use a magnetic stirrer in your kitchen
YES!!!! Oh YES!!! Can I also have an incubator? And a little fermentor? Then I can incubate my yeast cultures (i.e. bread) and make yoghurt with scientific precision!
36. You don't put YOUR "gel" in your hair.
I think I finally understood the inquisitive faces of my neighbors when I mentioned “staining my gel” to them…
37. Your best jigsaw was a 20 piece S. Blot.
I played with it for the good part of one year
38. You know what an S. Blot is.
Duh!
39. You use et al. outside of science writing
Afraid so…
40. You subconsciously reach for your 70% ethanol bottle after touching things in the kitchen.
No, but I’d like a squeezing bottle instead of those spray bottles you buy at supermarkets.
41. You have to turn off shows like CSI in disgust when they pipet bubbles or get HPLC results in 30 seconds.
I am safe here: no telly!
42. You name your "Rock Band" the In Vitro Gentlemen and honestly think it is an awesome name for a band
Might get good money from the sponsor…
43. You name your triathlon relay team the wild types and think it's an awesome name
Where’s the sponsor?!
44. You know exactly what 10 microliters of liquid looks like
Yep…I can tell you if the pipette needs calibrating!
45. When you get yogurt or sour cream from a container at home you barely open the lid and use a *really* clean spoon.
Well, no…but I got my mum all confused when one morning I mentioned the importance of avoiding cross-contamination between jam and peanutbutter
46. On Fridays, you enjoy high-throuhgput drinking.
No, that’s a good one!
47. You've taken a microscope camping.
Not yet…but I do know of people who take the microscope home…or their sealed plates to take good pictures…
48. You name your pets / children after your favorite molecules
Nope…but there are scientists that name proteins after their wives!

Ok, when you finish laughing you can leave a comment…I really would like to see how many apply to you!

In the doldrums

[...]
Day after day, day after day,
We stuck, nor breath nor motion;
As idle as a painted ship
Upon a painted ocean.
[...]

by S. T. Coleridge
The Rime of the ancient mariner

I used to LOVE reading poetry and imagining how those beautiful foreign words would sound. Now they are not that foreign anymore, but I still would love to hear them coming out of the lips of a "native" ;-)

biglietti dolorosi

In genere mi salvo andando agli arrivi.

I call them "the sorrowfull tickets" and they are already much more abundant than the 5 mysteries typical of the Rosary. The sorrowfull tickets are return tickets for Schiphol, i.e. Amsterdam Airport. They are return tickets, you see? and generally thet get printed straight after a one-way-only for Schiphol.

They are the train tickets for when I have to bring someone to the airport, and then I come back on my own.
You'd say I should be used ot it, but I am not. for sure experience helped my aura of professionality: I don't even need to READ the screens to find out at what desk I have to go...a quick glimpse while coming up from the train platform is more then enough. I am an extremely efficient escort. I can translate dialect-to-dutch, dutch-to-italian, italian-to-dutch...and if I get confused I do dialect-italian (kinda useless, I know...the only dialect I know is ancient verona slang). With the precision of swiss clockwork, the escorted reaches the security-check area. not too late (so as not to be obliged to rush or jump the queue), nor too early (I SO hate those coffee sipped while waiting to say goodbye to someone). In one smooth velvety movement, I take you from the train to the chack-in and from the check-in to the security-check. The passport-control guy takes a look at me and bites the bullet, he doesn't complain when, after the quick smiley kiss-goodbye, I stand there, looking anxiously beyond the metal detector. I wait for that well-known head to emerge again from the crowd "on the other side". there it is...a well known arm raised in the air, a hand waves another, final this time, goodbye. I wave back, smile, turn around and walk. I just manage to turn the corner. Then I have to bite my lip. Looking around, I realize I don't know this place. The professional escort has finished her job and forgot her body here at the airport. Generally what saves me are the arrival gates...I go there, enjoy looking at a few hugs, the "welcome" baloons and the traffic jams caused by overloaded luggage trolleys left there 'cause the persons pushing them started to hug the rest of the airport. But this time no luck. It's not holiday season, it's not the favourite time-slot for low cost companies...but should't it be a MORAL DUTY for the airport to have at least ONE landing, huge crowd of people, guaranteed at each hour? so I would know where to go when I need to cheer up! This time I HAD to go to a book store, you see...and it costed me...dearly! 17 euros to be precise. and not one, but two books...damn it! Of course I already finished reading them...notice the date on the ticket? quite and oldie...it's from when I brought GH to the airport, two weeks after my operation...

seed grenades

vorrei vedere esplosioni floreali in Italia, Giappone, Olanda, Inghilterra, Australia, USA, Norvegia, Croazia e Polonia...

well, yes...sounds rather '60s, doesn't it? but instead of the abused leit motif "make love, not war", this idea seems somewhat "fresher"...throw seed grenades into crumbled buildings, poor estates, fogotten bits of land in between two lanes of a street...everywhere you think there's too much grey, throw in a flower bomb.
I am not kidding!

the idea came decades ago to a group of people who saw tomato plants growing among the ruins of buildings...someone says it was in San Francisco, others say it was New York. it doesn't matter.
It's a rather undercover movement, but I hope they reach critical mass. There's a whole network of "Seeds swappers" out there, and they are not only the ones with a veggie garden waiting to be ploughed. The green guerilla (yep, spelled with one r) is getting bigger and bigger. the ingredients for the bomb, as well as detailed instructions on how to assemple it, are, of course, online. please do be careful: try to use seeds form plants which are native to the area, let's avoid further ecologic mayhem.
find some fine clay, some compost (same amounts of both) and pick your choice of seeds, a mixture works best.
mix the seeds with the compost, add clay, add enough water to wet the mixture so that you can compact it with your hands. place to dry on your windowsill (or somewhere warm, I guess)...then, brace your weapon and GO GO GO!
I'd love to think of all of you as green guerilla fighters, armed with your very own (hopefully biodegradable) bag filled with compost-bombs. you can even have a signature...floreal signature, that is! you could be the Sunflower army (4 seeds per bomb would do), The Tomato Knight (S. Marzano si still my favourite) or the Rose Avenger (please let it be wild rose...Rosa canina).
I'd love to see flower explosions in Italy, Japan, Holland, England, Ansutralia, USA, Norway, Croatia and Poland...

Macavity, the Mistery cat

I know...I should be focusing on an entirely different category of written words... sexy scientific reports and fascinating graphs with fitting curves studded with little itsy-bitsy jewel-like error bars...but I discovered this lovely little poem, written by nothing less than T. S. Eliot. It's part of Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, which Andrew Lloyd Webber put into music.
If you are a cat lover, but even if you are not, click here

Macavity's a Mystery Cat: he's called the Hidden Paw--
For he's the master criminal who can defy the Law.
He's the bafflement of Scotland Yard, the Flying Squad's despair:
For when they reach the scene of crime--Macavity's not there!

Macavity, Macavity, there's no one like Macavity,
He's broken every human law, he breaks the law of gravity.
His powers of levitation would make a fakir stare,
And when you reach the scene of crime--Macavity's not there!
You may seek him in the basement, you may look up in the air--
But I tell you once and once again, Macavity's not there!

Macavity's a ginger cat, he's very tall and thin;
You would know him if you saw him, for his eyes are sunken in.
His brow is deeply lined with thought, his head is highly doomed;
His coat is dusty from neglect, his whiskers are uncombed.
He sways his head from side to side, with movements like a snake;
And when you think he's half asleep, he's always wide awake.

Macavity, Macavity, there's no one like Macavity,
For he's a fiend in feline shape, a monster of depravity.
You may meet him in a by-street, you may see him in the square--
But when a crime's discovered, then Macavity's not there!

He's outwardly respectable. (They say he cheats at cards.)
And his footprints are not found in any file of Scotland Yard's.
And when the larder's looted, or the jewel-case is rifled,
Or when the milk is missing, or another Peke's been stifled,
Or the greenhouse glass is broken, and the trellis past repair--
Ay, there's the wonder of the thing! Macavity's not there!

And when the Foreign Office finds a Treaty's gone astray,
Or the Admiralty lose some plans and drawings by the way,
There may be a scrap of paper in the hall or on the stair--
But it's useless of investigate--Macavity's not there!
And when the loss has been disclosed, the Secret Service say:
"It must have been Macavity!"--but he's a mile away.
You'll be sure to find him resting, or a-licking of his thumbs,
Or engaged in doing complicated long division sums.

Macavity, Macavity, there's no one like Macacity,
There never was a Cat of such deceitfulness and suavity.
He always has an alibit, or one or two to spare:
And whatever time the deed took place--MACAVITY WASN'T THERE!
And they say that all the Cats whose wicked deeds are widely known
(I might mention Mungojerrie, I might mention Griddlebone)
Are nothing more than agents for the Cat who all the time
Just controls their operations: the Napoleon of Crime!

Funny pics of cats with even funnier LolCat captions (like the one above) are to be found here...thank you MyYear! you are responsible for my addiction to LolCat! And here I was, thinking I was a dog-lover!

Signor(a) si'!

Ve li ricordate i tre sgruntosi magi? Quelli dell’ambulanza?

papa’--a comprar medicine;

come e' andata a finire?

Do you remember my three grumpy Kings? Those in the ambulance? My three knights in heavy armour (no really...ever noticed how heavy those paramedic clothes are?) who escorted me, delicate princess (?!) on that colorful carriage…do you remember?
I don’t know if I told you what happened next! Well, nothing happened really: what…with the Hospital crammed with patients (especially the E.R. department), overworked doctors stretching shifts, ecographs that that are more precious than gold and tend to be snatched from one department to the other…I spent all my holiday waiting for a phone call, about possible but not-so-realistically feasible appointments.

I never quite understood why in Italy, as soon as they call you, you’ve got to RUN. Pick up your own test results (here they send them directly to the doctor or to you…), or rush to book some more tests...
Basically, pray your Gods to stay healthy while you start studying...’cause if you get sick, on top of worrying for your health you’ve got to start learning fast: to disentangle yourself among doctors, specialists, appointments, paying bills, picking up your test results (cannot be done without the receipt of said payment) and finding your way in the labyrinth that is called “hospital” you DO need a degree…Either that, or you are lucky enough to have a mama with a missed vocational call for medicine, one that will follow any TV program about medicine and health, one that will read and analyze your blood tests results with the same passion and dedication reserved to a very popular (at least in her family) women magazine. If your mum belongs to this category, you are quite safe. When the need comes, she drops the apron of domestic goddess and wears the medical helmet: she’ll plan attack strategies like a true commandos…urban guerrilla is NOTHING. Her territory is the hospital (any hospital), maps of all laboratories and departments are memorized...names, addresses and opening times of ALL local chemists are also known...and your clinical records go back to the day you were born.
Said general of the medical guerrilla can make you snap to attention faster than lightning. She will then proceed to list all the moves planned for the medical attack:
Dad --get those medicines (details of the closest open chemist shop follow)
Brother (mine, that is)--translate for your brother in law, while escorting the patient.
Patient (me) – start practicing puppy-eyed face and lament grave family situation at home (oh, well...I guess that with two Japanese and MFSJ coming all from Holland and staying under that Italian roof, the family situation can be thought as peculiar...we’ll use the shock-factor and take those doctors by surprise!)
Ah yeah...I forgot to mention: the general will coordinate all movements from Head Quarters (home) while looking after MFSJ…bless to the multitasking goddess!
Ah yeah (number two)...I forgot to mention: the second Japanese stays home with the general…you never know.
Team set?! Move Move move!
So...how did it go? Well...a tragedy. I blame my gall bladder for making me waste the whole of my Xmas holiday. But there is a super-positive twist of the story. I’m back in Flatland and I’ll say goodbye to my gallbladder in less than a month. My “general” decided to come and take charge: she’ll be coordinating the whole medical guerrilla operation (she says that the real operation, the one involving scalpels and anesthetic, is for the surgeon)...I don’t know how she’ll get through the linguistic barrier, but my GH is ever so resourceful...)…the really good twist to the story is that the general will necessarily arrive a few days before surgery and will stay for at least a full two weeks after that. HURRAY! And this time, that lazy bum of Mr DIM won’t be able to complain (yeah…the one who always tells me that “two weeks are too much, maximum ten days but if it is only one week it’s better…”). He is not allowed...not when I can wave the flags of anesthetic and surgery! my mum is MINE. Better if I keep quiet though...we haven’t actually booked the plane ticket yet.

Oroscopo

E dai: vai a leggerti l’oroscopo.

I don’t like horoscopes...no really, I don’t. BUT there’s one that I love to read. It comes out every Thursday and it’s written by Rob Brezsky...I haven’t got a clue who he is, but I found it translated in Italian for Internazionale and to tell the whole truth, I like the layout of the italian page SO MUCH MORE (less commercial, more elegant and streamlined).
Maybe, if you are an expert, upon close inspection, you can find the astral connection between pearls of wisdom, quotes worthy of the Readers Digest, various news and curiosities. I'm born Aries, but when it comes to Rob's ramibling, I fake it, and pretend to be Libra if I want to...I consider it a corollary theorem of the 10 Rights of the Reader. And astral thread or not, it still manages to make me smile, maybe a bit like the arrival gates at Schiphol (and last time there was really a madly happy dog dancing around) and funny videos strictly for science-geeks…in these times of crisis, you really don’t want to throw away a smile, right? Go on, check it out…

Diavolo Inka22ato

once upon a time was a fierce and energetic young lady, whose angry glance could pulverise you faster than a lightning strike.
once upon a time, she lived life to the fullest, sure that not even the Armageddon could knock her down.
Once upon a time one highly inspired fellow cunningly found that her nickname translated phonetically to "angry devil" in Japanese. very fitting...
once upon a time...
looks to me as if either armageddon has come, or a little thunderstorm in a teacup (maybe coffee cup...possibly espresso-size?) got the better of her anyway.
R.I.P. Angry Devil?

R.I.P. Diavolo Inca22ato?

Confrere

I recently helped out a friend with some legal documents...in dutch.I got involved. I know what you are thinking: I do everything with too much passion...maybe it's my being italian, maybe (hopfully) it's just me...
but I can now tell you that lawyer's jargon is not for the faint hearted.
and what makes it even more gut-churning is that high words, latin phrases, acronyms and other linguistic amenities become the cinically and ferociously marching army you set against your opponent.
lawyers here call each other "confrere"...which to me smells of monastic life and ascetic thoughts (afterall, monks call eachother "confratello", in italy...you see where my problem is)
how can you call your colleague "confrere" and then lay out lies and accusations and requests which have no reason to be?
I got involved, too much...
now every time my eyes see one of those horrid faxed messages starting "geachte confrere" I just want to run away...I don't do it just 'cause my friend needs my translation.
those letters seemed to never stop. there was always some new bit to discuss...and the use and abuse of this fraternity-in-deed makes me sick.
Do I have to add lawyers next to journalists in my list of most-hated professions?

the boxer

There are tummy-churning memories that can leave you paralyzed and breathless...but who (or what) brings them back? For me the fatal blows comes always from a smell (dear old Suskind) or from a sound...a melody.
Nowadays I work with my earphones steadily wedged into my years, connected to my iTunes collection and yesterday ONE particular song came up, and threw itself against my chest...unexpected...it's the song here, in the video...a big hand grabbed me pulled me out of my reviews on melanins (thank God for that) and threw me back a good…uhm…25 years. Me and my dad, on the way back from our Sunday spent skiing…I am now glued to my wheeley computer chair as tired as all those years ago, when I would inevitably fall asleep on the car seat, dad on my left driving smoothly along the windey road down the mountain. Clear as if it were yesterday, I remember that proud tiredness in the legs, the sense of accomplishment and the safety I felt for having my big mr DIM taking care of me.
Even now that I can understand the lyrics, and oh-boy aren’t they sad, the tummy-churning-heart-squeezing-throat-aching comes from my memories…and the realization that I am no kid anymore and that mr DIM would prefer to watch skiing competitions on the big tube, rather than take me up the mountain again. Oh well…that’s life. Better start changing the playlist…otherwise I’m never gonna finish the review...

tre sgruntosi magi

The Three Kings arrived early this year...they came not by camel but by a special four-wheeled cart, with optional syrens...and they came for a special baby jesus: myself! No, I am not going nuts...but last saturday I scared relatives and friends...except MFSJ who was already asleep. nothing to worry about...it's clear that if I am here to write about it, there's nothing to worry, right?

I "simply" fainted because of an unbearable pain in my stomach...but let's not bother with those medical details...the nice thing is that I GOT A FREE RIDE ON AN AMBULANCE! No, no syrens...the efficiency of the three volunteers was fantastic...pity that I was in too much pain to ask their names...three amazing specimen of "mountaneers" D.O.C. (Denominazione di Origine Controllata...aka "authentic")...those rare (or maybe not?) specimen that don't greet you, they "sgrunt" you...all with the best of intention, let it be clear...I really felt at home! it was YEARS since my last encounter with said specimen from "my mountains"...unmissable experience. They barely said two words during the WHOLE trip to the hospital, and when the youngest one asked me how I was doing, and added a super-polite "signora" (mrs) at the end of the sentence , I almost fainted again! Here I am, in pain, with three "sgrunting" Kings, I don't know if, maybe, you came out on call for nothing, if, maybe, it was enough to stay home with a hot water bottle, and you call me MRS?!!!I AM NOT YOUR GRANDMA! But I am ever so grateful for those three blessings...pity I don't know their names! They got me into hospital with a "Yellow code" and stayed with me until the nurse arrived... The doctor at the E.R. later said that I had a colic...gall bladder, most likely...and this is confirmed by yet another round of blood tests that I will have to repeat tomorrow...
Anyway: nothing to worry about...all under control. and I even got my ambulance ride! thanks to my three Kings...

Barista

We are classy, there's no doubt about it! We are the “we British” people, according to MFJ (Call it identity crisis…). Of course the dimensions of our flat limit us a bit in the choice of staff, and we cannot afford to hire full time George The Butler, but we do have our very own barista...she can make an excellent (ehm...well...) coffee, although she is not a good listener...in fact, she really doesn't listen, not a bit.

The little miss can work the espresso machine with great precision, and requires the help of her faithful assistant (aka "mama") to place the coffee powder in the special holder. Oh yeah: the assistant must remember to place the coffee cup OF THE RIGHT colour at the right height for the barista to take it. DO NOT EVER, under any circumstances, place said coffee cup under the nozzle! It would be an unforgivable mistake, and the barista doesn't like such clear indications of sloppiness.
Our little barista has only another tiny defect: she gets distracted. The red and green little lights are SO interesting, and they must be poked as much as one can. And if mama comes dangerously close (i.e. tries to make a coffee for herself), then it's like the end of the world is suddenly in front of your very eyes...she screams "mama, sit" and the strength of her intention glues instantly your posterior bit to the chair. And finally, after sweet and repeated requests (Corinna, please..Corinna, focus, Corinna, don't get distracted...Corinna...CORINNA! F-O-C-U-S!) The magic switch is flicked, and the so-much-needed coffee starts coming out.
And at this point, the barista walks away.
Wha..t? And my coffee? C’mon, it's getting diluted!!! But the barista is lost...you can try to lure her back, beg her to stop the machine (I repeat, don't try to do it by yourself...I repeat: do not do it!) "Corinna...klaar...K-L-A-A-R...CORINNA, KLAAR"! So in the end you get your (diluted) coffee and the barista (such a caring person, really) insist in mixing sugar into the little black swimming pool she just served you.
There you have it: a little bossy barista in the making. I bet next time you come to visit you'll ask for chamomile!
BUT mama got smart too, you know? When mama is in need of coffee and the bossy barista won't let go(screaming expressions such as "niet doen" and "Ikka do it" are quite common), then mama starts the waterworks and runs to daddy for comfort. Oh...Corinna look! You made mamma cry! Believe me it works! She is miss-I-do-it-all but, very caring, comes close to you and kindly encourages you to make the coffee. Not only that, she places her little hand on your lap and tells you which cup to take (mine is always pink, dad's blue), which switch to flick, when to stop the machine...and in the end she declares "goed gedaan, mama"
Thanks sweetheart...I’m in my mid-30s, I do make decent espresso according to our guests, but no one had ever complimented me for my coffee-making performances!

Polenta

This post will sound so strange for the italian readers...they all know what polenta is, although I don't know if they would all agree with me if I say that the Northern league would be better off calling its promised land "polentonia" (polenta land) rather than Padania.

But it seems that not many people outside italy know about this simple staple food! they all know pizza and pasta...but polenta is a recent discovery.
I remember very well a certain party at Kloksteeg...a sort of "polenta party". Dear me, it's the easiest thing to make! I was almost ashamed of bringing such simple stuff. but they all loved it.
It turned out that I, the one who could cook for days on end, was often requested to bring polenta and mushrooms to our parties! so easy: the polentamatic does all the stirring, and the mushrooms must be let to cook slowly, don't even touch them...at least according to my method. anyway, regardless of the time spent in hte kitchen, the important thing is that people liked it, and "mhmmm-aah" was all you could hear during dinner.
Polenta comes in three varieties: yellow, white and mixed with buckwheat. You see...polentonia is not a very united land, not even where polenta is concerned!! I bet el senatur will soon divide his polentonia in three federal states, based on the colour of what is cooking in the "paiolo".
Although I didn't grow up where my parents were born, I did grow up eating A LOT of polenta...the yellow one in my case...possibly made from "fioretto" flour (finely milled, different from the "bramata" which is coarser and has a bitter aftertaste). We also like it cooked soft (no, not liquid, as if you wanted to eat it with a straw...but soft yes). On the other hand those mountain people who live pearched on the Orobian Alps eat their polenta mixed with buckwheat flour and cooked to a hard blob...it can stand on the wooden knife used to cut it...in fact, you can cut it using a string!
finally, the white polenta: it comes from a special variety of corn cultivated in the nothern region Veneto and known as “biancoperla” (pearlywhite), delicate and precious...
well, what can I say? I miss polenta! I can find it here, but now I'd like to get started on some experiments and the Culinary Missionary cannot do without the white cornflour! Even the buckwheat one is not easy to find: I generally smuggle it in my suitcase!
I admit I fell even more in love with MFJ when he first admitted that he liked polenta, and now My Favourite Semi Japanese becomes FULL ITALIAN everytime she sees polenta on the table: daughter of her proud mother, she was already eating polenta well before her first birthday!!!
