...e c'e' di piu': i suoceri sono atterrati proprio ieri sera a Schiphol. La zona di Yokohama dove vivono non e' stata particolarmente colpita dal terremoto. Anche lo ZIO e sua moglie stanno bene. Nonni materni e il loro clan sono al sicuro. Grazie a tutti per le numerosissime email e telefonate. Anche Andrea sta bene: potete seguire i suoi update qui.

Che miracolo. Erano MESI che chiedevamo che venissero a trovarci, finalmente avevano prenotato. il giorno prima del terremoto hanno spedito i bagagli all' aeroporto. il giorno del terremoto avevano appuntamento in ospedale per un checkup totale, quando la prima scossa si e' fatta sentire erano appena usciti in strada. E con una determinazione che ha dell'incredibile, il MATTINO DOPO si sono messi in viaggio, di buon ora, per raggiungere l' aeroporto. ci hanno messo 6 ore quando normalmente ce ne vogliono 2 e mezza (in autobus e con tutte le fermate di linea).
L'aereo e' partito, in ritardo ma e' partito. E ieri sera sono atterrati a Schiphol. Si fa fatica a non piangere. Il primo pensiero e' stato per la MSGP, impegnata tuto venerdi' pomeriggio a cuocere e decorare i biscotti per Ojichan e Obachan...il primo regalo ad uscire dalla valigia dei miracoli e' stato proprio un peluche per lei. La valigia dei miracoli: Babbo Natale ieri aveva gli occhi a mandorla. Una valigia con pochissime cose per il loro viaggio, una valigia che doveva proprio portarci un pezzetto di Giappone in Olanda.
Le nostre richieste erano state meticolosamente esaudite: umeboshi e soba, natto e nori...noi festeggiavamo un Natale a scoppio ritardato mentre una fetta di Giappone soffre le drammatiche conseguenze del terremoto.
Non sanno ancora dell' emergenza nucleare, erano in viaggio quando le prime news sui reattori hanno cominciato a moltiplicarsi. Per ora giocano con la MSGP, una piccola isola spazio-temporale di serenita'.

They are all safe...and there's more: my inlaws landed just last night at Schiphol airport. The part of Yokohama where tehy live was not heavily affected by the earthquake. Also MFJ's uncle and his wife are well, and so are the Grandparents and their "clan". Thanks to all of you for the many emails and phone calls.

It's just a miracle. for MONTHS we tried to convicne them to come and visit us, and finally they had booked. The day before the quake they diligently shipped their luggage to the airport, the day of the quake they were booked in for a body check-up, tehy had just left the hospital when the first earthquake hit Japan. And with a determination which is...incredible...the MORNING AFTER the quake, while the earth was still trembling, they picked up their hang luggage and started their journey to reach the airport. It took them 6 hours, while generally with the bus and all the stops in between it takes only 2.5.
The plane left, with a bit of delay but it left. and yesterday it landed in Schiphol. It's difficult not to cry. Their first thought was for MFSJ, who had been busy all friday afternoon baking and decorating cookies for Ojichan and Obachan...the first present to pop out of the suitcase was indeed a lovely Nijntje rabbit for her. The suitcase of miracles: Santa Claus yesterday had almond-shaped eyes. A suitcase with very little for our "santas", a suitcase which was packed to bring a bit of Japan to Holland.
We got all that we requested: umeboshi and soba, natto and nori...we were celebrating a delayed Xmas while a chunk of Japan was still facing the terrible aftermath of the quake.
They don't know yet about the nuclear emergency, they were travelling when the first news about the power plants started to appear. For now they are playing with MFSJ, a peaceful time/space island of serenity.

Da ieri sera la MSGP ed io siamo sole: il MGP torna in patria per un paio di settimane. Viaggio di lavoro, pensa un po'! Per l'occasione il POVERINO dovra' indossare giacche e cravatte...che ingiustizia: lui si tira a lucido ed io non posso nemmeno godermelo...l'ultima volta che l'ho visto con il completo e' stato quando ci siamo sposati!

I preparativi di viaggio sono cominciati ben prima che venisse prenotato il biglietto. MDO e' stata reclutata come esperta di moda e gran guru' di praticita'. Lunghe videoconferenze hanno facilitato il compito al team di esperti: consulenza metereologica, liste su liste di quel che serve, quel che c'e' e quel che manca. La trasferta italica post-natalizia ci e' servita sia per ritemprare lo spirito e riempire lo stomaco che per alleggerire il portafoglio. La giacca che abbiamo trovato gli sta cosi' bene, ma cosi' bene, che e' un peccato vedergliela togliere! A rischio di rovinarla, dovrebbe usarla SEMPRE, anche come pigiama.
Un vero principe azzurro...che invece di sfoggiare Spade di Verita' e Scudi di Virtu', indossera' armature di professionalita' (le giacche) e vessilli di confidenza (le cravatte). E come il principe della Bella Addormentata, anche il nostro eroe ha avuto tre fatine a dargli una mano: la MSGP, MDO e la mogliettina.
Mogliettina che intanto, dopo un mese di preparativi, puo' aggiungere un altro pallino alla lista di skills del curriculum: dopo aver stabilito il guardaroba, controllato i souvenir pro-businness, supervisionato le prove generali per valigia imbarcata e bagaglio a mano, stabilito le combinazioni camicia-cravatta-completo, calzino-pantalone-scarpa, nonche' aver improvvisato un workshop sul nodo alla windsor...mi prendono all'ESTEC per preparare il bagaglio agli astronauti! non lascio niente al caso! Controllo tutto...secondo me il MGP e' scappato in uno scatto di esasperazione!
Scherzi a parte: buon viaggio amore mio, torna vincitore. E non ti azzardare a restare la' perche' vengo a prenderti!


From last night MFSJ and me are alone: MFG goes back to the Land of the Rising Sun for a couple of weeks. Businness trip, lucky him! For the occasion, the POOR soul will have to wear suit and tie...this SO not fair! He goes around Japan all dressed up and I can't even enjoy the view! Last time I saw him wearing a suit was when we got married!

Preparations started well in advance: the ticket was not yet booked. GH was hired as fashionista and Practicality Guru. Long videoconferences (aka "skypeing") aided our team of experts in their task: weather forecast checked, lists of what-is-needed, what-we-have, what-we-need. The trip to Italy around Xmas was named "holiday", yes...and indeed we *refurbished* our spirit and filled our stomachs, but we also made our walled fetherlight! We found a jacket which looked SO good, but SO good, that it was a pity to see him take it off. I would say he should wear it even as payama, although it might ruin the shape.
A true Prince Charming...who, instead of brandishing The Sword of Truth protected by the shield of Virtue, he'll wear the Armour of Professionality (the suit) holding the Banner of Confidence (the tie). Thinking about it...as Prince charming in Sleeping Beauty, MY prince was also helped by three pixies: MFSJ, GH and wife.
Wife who, after a month of preparations, can add yet another line to her CV:
after having agreed on a traveling wardrobe, checked all the pro-businness souvenirs, supervised all the packing possibilities for hand luggage and checked-in luggage (I'm the master of 3D tetris!!), having listed all approved combinations for jacket-shirt-tie and socks-shoe-belt, having improvised a workshop on "the windsor style of tie-knotting"...I think I'd have a permanent position at ESTEC to make sure the astronauts don't leave their toohbrush behind! I check everything...I'm starting to think that MFJ didn't leave: he run away in exasperation!
Enough of joking: have a safe trip my love. And don't you dare stay there, because I'll be there in a sec to take you back!

Intanto sono felice di annunciare che la furoshiki-mania si sta spandendo a vista d'olio anche nel paese d'origine...per chi volesse far pratica (HappyHappy, questa e' per te!) ecco due schemi disegnati dalla sottoscritta per realizzare due borse multiuso.

FUROSHIKI TOTE BAG (primo schema, cliccare per ingrandire): stendere la stoffa. formare un "laccio" lungo con la punta A ed uno corto con la punta D. Fare un doppio nodo D su A, in modo che il laccio D non spunti piu' di tanto, lasciando il laccio A lungo. Ripetere con le estremita' B su C.
prendere le estremita' A e C, fare un doppio nodo...FINITOOOOOOOOOOOO. Questo e' lo schema usato per la borsa che vedete qui...

BORSETTA (secondo schema, cliccare sul disegno per ingrandirlo): piegare la stoffa in diagonale, rovescio all'interno. annodare su se stessa l'estremita' A. ripetere con estremita' C. Rovesciare le due estremita' annodate all'interno, si viene a creare una specie di sacca. Chiudere con un doppio nodo le estremita' B e D. FINITOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Il doppio nodo in realta' deve essere fatto in un certo modo, per essere super-resistente senza perdere in eleganza. La nonna del MGP mi ha spiegato come si fa, ma siccome dirlo a parole e' un problema, vi faccio un disegnino e lo pubblico appena posso.

FUROSHIKI TOTE BAG (top scheme, click on picture to enlarge): place the fabric on a flat surface. make a double knot between A and D, making A very long and D quite short. repeat between C and B leaving C long and B short. Join A and C with a double knot. DOOOOOOOOOOOOONE. This scheme was used to make the bag in this photo.

HANDBAG (second scheme, click on picture to enlarge): fold the fabric in diagonal, wrong side in. Knot A on itself, repeat with C. Flip those two big knots inside. join B and D with a double knot. DOOOOOOOOOOOOOONE.
Let me know the results ;-)

The double-knot must be done in a special way, to make sure it's super-strong yet elegant. For now, just make two knots one on top of the other...the best grandma in the world (aka MFJ's Grandma) explained me how to do it, but it's difficult to explain in words...so I'll draw it for you and post it as soon as I can.
