Kokenaar

I’m afraid Francis, the host of the show “cooking with dog” is not Little Lily’s hero anymore. She’s now totally addicted to any show presented by Rudolph van Veen, a dutch chef who has at least 3 different programs on the dutch cooking channel 24kitchen. So strong is the addiction, that she started standing next to me while I cook dinner, pretending to be talking to the camera. She helps me chopping, stirring and slicing while explaining what she’s doing and giving all sorts of funny explanations on how and why and for how long…it’s great for mama, who gets some help, and is great for her, who gets to be “Rudolphina” for a while…we even sing the jingle of the program before setting to the task! After dinner, we both rush to the living room, where “de kokenaar” will dazzle us. KOKENAAR… I wouldn’t know how to translate this…cooker? Not intended as the appliance but as a person who cooks? sometimes it surprises me how children come up with words which don’t exist but make sense: in our bathroom we have “droger en natter” (dryer and wetter, aka washing machine), now we have the “kokenaar” on telly!

Purtroppo Francis, il resentatore dello show “cooking with dog” non e’ piu’ l’eroe preferito di Little Lily!

New Life

So, this is the drawing I was talking about here. Isn't it lovely? MFSJ is really good! Although I must say she's not My Favourite Semi-Japanese anymore...I mean, she is, but she's not the only one. Since a month ago, there are TWO MORE! The little family under the roof is not so little anymore, we are now FIVE!

Ecco i miei tesori...
Here are my treasures...

MLL: My Little Lily, proudly holding MLS

MLN: My Little Ninja

MLS: My Little Samurai

Il mio giapponese preferito, invece, resta sempre LUI
My favourite Japanese will always be HIM

CoBaP

This post was TOTALLY inspired by this one...I so wanted to reply to Notablogger's question, that I decided to show what MFSJ and I made together.
let's call it the Collaborative Bag Project!
It was one of those wednesday afternoon of boredom when the two of us were stuck at home...one little sad piece of jeans was saved from the bin and enriched with various bits of wanna-be-projects form years gone by (seriously!)
MFSJ knows what she wants, and is really picky about transferring into reality the idea she has formed in her mind. But this was fun: we spent some great quality time together: she complimented me on my skills, while she took on the role as main designer. It's the only bag she uses on a regular basis, and it's entirely hand-stitched.
The bag is lined with some vichy-patterned fabric which originally I had bought to make furoshikis.
The three apples are crocheted, and I had to work really fast to meet the demands of the designer: forgive me for not sharing the pattern, but I think I just made it up! the same goes for the green leaves... the crocheted heart does have a pattern, but my house is such a mess right now that I can't locate the piece of paper where it's scribbled. the cross-stitched tulip band was meant to be a bookmark, but had been sitting in my sewing box for a good 4 years!
MFSJ made the strap using a circular loom, although it took so long that in the end she asked if mama could finish it.
to close the bag, you need to pass the little ball into a loop and then tie the string together with the one holding the heart. it's all a bit complicated, but we are proud of it: the idea formed into MFSJ's mind and it was NOT easy to please her while I tried my best at translating it into reality.
I like how she TREASURED these lefovers she found, putting them together is such a lovingly-made article!

More recently she made some magnificent drawings, one of which we used for a special card...one to announce a very different type of Collaborative Project!!!
Stay tuned.

L'ho battezzato "The Collaborative Bag Project"!

Stay tuned.

Love is in the air...

actually, not really in the air...but hanging from our pergola. Our garden has always been a hot spot for bird watching, but both birdhouses remained sadle mepty this year (while our amazing neighbor Linda could take care of a family of coal tits).
But... we do have a couple who constantly visits us: two big fat blackbirds, so neat that they decided to clean the gutter of the roof of the garden shed (good for me, so I didn’t need to climb it with the ladder). But...to closer observation, Mr and Mrs Merlo didn’t travel too far with their bounty of twigs and moss. So I had a good look, and guess what? they didn’t even fly two meters! Their nest is on the pergola in front of our kitchen! I couldn’t see it before because GH is obsessed with courtains and those in the kitchen were the first to be intstalled...
we are a bit worried.
the canopy offered by grapevine leaves is not really watertight...and here it keeps raining really hard! and, in your honest opinion, does this nest hold?
Anyway: I can’t wait to tell the neighbor that we were also chosen as godparents for a nestful of feathery babies!!! Especially because this afternoon I just noticed the tail of Mrs Merlo sticking out of the nest!!! Aw...motherhood!

average conversation

This happened this morning, while I was still trying to figure out if I had put the sugar in my coffee...

MFSJ: Mama, welke dag is het vandaag?
ME: Maandag
MFSJ: En welke taal spreken wij vandaag?
ME: ...ehm...wat jij wil?

Translated:
Mom, what day is today?
Monday
And what language do we speak today?
...ehm...the one you want?

I know...mea culpa...it was my idea to have different languages spoken on different days. We started over the weekend. Saturday was Italian Day (because MFJ wants to practice as well), Sunday was English Day (because I want to practice and MFSJ seems to enjoy it)...we did mention we were going to try a Japanese Day as well as a Dutch day, but we hadn't decided yet, hence the question this morning. In the end I suggested that today was "favourite language day" and the little one decided that mama was to speak Italian, she was going to speak dutch (big grin on her face), papa could decide...
We are having a lot of fun with these language days, though...although it's now impossible to mention the word "ice cream" in any language without getting full (undesired) attention! We'll spell it backwards, I guess.
But it's reassuring to see that playing with languages is still a lot of fun and not a burden.

ME: Maandag
MFSJ: En welke taal spreken wij vandaag?
ME: ...ehm...wat jij wil?

Tradotto:
Mamma, che giorno e' oggi?
Lunedi'
e che lingua parliamo oggi?
...ehm...quella che vuoi?

Lo so...mea culpa...me la sono inventata io l'idea di parlare lingue diverse a seconda del giorno. Abbiamo cominciato sabato scorso.

5 little butterflies for the first 5 years of MFSJ! MFSJ wanted a pink cake, her friend requested his favourite
chocolate cake...everyone was pleased with the result. The only thing we bought was the pink glaze. The mint leaves come from the garden: MFSJ knows how good they look and taste together with strawberries, so she rushes to the garden with scissors in her hands as soon as cake decorating requires a strawberry! this was our first trial...next time will be even better.
Recipe Here
This is a muffin-dough recipe, and it's really easy and quick to bake.
You will need two bowls, in the first one sieve and mix all the dry ingredients:
210gr flour
210gr sugar (any variety, this time we used sugar cane, which was available in our pantry)
1/2 sachet baking powder
pinch of salt
70gr unsweetened cocoa powder
50gr chopped chocolate (crushed easter eggs work just as well)
in the second bowl mix
3 eggs
130gr melted butter
150ml milk

Now, line two cake tins of different size (we used a 21cm and a 12cm round tins) with parchment paper.
Mix quickly the content of the two bowls (12 turns of your wooden spoon) and pour the batter into the two tins.
Bake at 180C for 30 minutes.
Once baked, wait for the cakes to cool down. Cut away any bumps (my cakes tend to look always a bit like volcanoes...so I had to slice the top off) and flip them upside down.
I decorated the large cake with pink glaze (but melted white chocolate with a few drops of beetroot juice would do as well) and placed the small cake on top. I applied whipped cream to the top cake, and used a pastry bag (ziplog bag with one corner cut off) to apply the cream to the sides.
decorate as you please.
Enjoy!

70gr cacao in polvere

Buon appetito...

The goodbye pillow

This is the reason why my living room still has one courtain missing, the ironing got to a standstill (unless MFJ takes action) and my eyes feel very tired...I've been busy with the goodbye pillow.
Read more I love hands and handprints...so during the goodbye party for the Tomatsu family (10 adults and 10 kids in our new little lovenest) I asked everyone for their handprint. MFSJ helped to cut out all the paper shapes, which we then reproduced on coloured felt (Thank you Nancy!). After trying to glue all the hands on the green felt pillow, which didn't work, I decided to hand-stitch them ALL.
I have to admit I'm quite pleased with the result, which is inspiring even more handprint ideas!
And now I can finally finish the velcro-courtains!

E adesso posso finalmente concentrarmi sulle tendine velcrate!

Book Marathon...again!

oh...it’s lovely to sit in the garden and read your favourite book!
In reality, the time spent on the monkey businness has been squeezed in between two amazing novels.

I loved The 1000 autumns of Jakob de Zoet because...it sounds SO familiar. After all, you are reading about a dutch clerk stuck on Dejima Island, Nagasaki Bay, A.D. 1799.

I’ve got my own reverse Dejima island at home: there’s a japanese and a half stuck in holland here!
I enjoyed the characters, the plot, the landscapes...it all fits beautifully. There’s almost a sense of plot dejavu’...but that’s why this is such a beautiful historical novel.
MFJ gave it to me as a present, and patiently waited for me to re-emerge from those pages (560 of them) to ask “how is it?”...I guess I’ll be kind enough and lend it to him...

And the other novel?

The Help
, by Kathryn Sockett: her debut novel...let’s just say I can’t wait to read her NEXT one. The story is set in Jackson, Mississipi, in 1962. It’s riveting. it’s un-put-downable. Loved every word of it. you read what it feels like to be a black maid, working for a white family in those eventful years. If you have children, you’ll want a nanny like Aibileen...if you love good food, you’ll adore Minny (she’s sassy and big mouthed...but still! Her culinary skills are known in all of Jackson...just stay away from her chocolate cake, just in case). And you’ll like Skeeter too: 24, white, back from Uni, wants to be a writer and cannot explain why her black maid Constantine left so suddenly and cannot be traced: where is she?
I was sorry when I finished it, and all those characters are still walking beside me. I might read it again before monday, when I’ll return it to the proud owner...

Monkey Businness

I’ve been busy last weekend...creating mokeys out of socks. The tutorial is great, you find it here.

The first cutie was christened Smussy, but we think it might once have been “smoothie”: MFSJ does get confused.

Smussy is really a little queen, loved and cherished by our family.

In a few hours, the monkey family grew...here you see Smussy together with Pinky, the Brain and ...I don’t know what we called the pale pink one.

The Brain got adopted by BroInLaw, replaced now by Naughty (to stitch it was a nightmare: tail and arms kept getting in the way while I was finishing muzzle and eyes!)

A few suggestions: look for children socks size 26-30, possibly knee-long socks, avoid argyle at all costs (Pinky and the brain were a nightmare to stuff, got ripped multiple times too!), buy different patterns of the same size and then mix and match.
I’ve got 5 more coming up, and it’s not that all these monkeys will be monkeying around in our new lovenest: they are going to be shipped to friends and family...
What can I say? Fancy a sock monkey? Send me a pair of socks, I’ll work my magic :-)

They are all safe...and there's more: my inlaws landed just last night at Schiphol airport. The part of Yokohama where tehy live was not heavily affected by the earthquake. Also MFJ's uncle and his wife are well, and so are the Grandparents and their "clan". Thanks to all of you for the many emails and phone calls.
It's just a miracle. for MONTHS we tried to convicne them to come and visit us, and finally they had booked. The day before the quake they diligently shipped their luggage to the airport, the day of the quake they were booked in for a body check-up, tehy had just left the hospital when the first earthquake hit Japan. And with a determination which is...incredible...the MORNING AFTER the quake, while the earth was still trembling, they picked up their hang luggage and started their journey to reach the airport. It took them 6 hours, while generally with the bus and all the stops in between it takes only 2.5.
The plane left, with a bit of delay but it left. and yesterday it landed in Schiphol. It's difficult not to cry. Their first thought was for MFSJ, who had been busy all friday afternoon baking and decorating cookies for Ojichan and Obachan...the first present to pop out of the suitcase was indeed a lovely Nijntje rabbit for her. The suitcase of miracles: Santa Claus yesterday had almond-shaped eyes. A suitcase with very little for our "santas", a suitcase which was packed to bring a bit of Japan to Holland.
We got all that we requested: umeboshi and soba, natto and nori...we were celebrating a delayed Xmas while a chunk of Japan was still facing the terrible aftermath of the quake.
They don't know yet about the nuclear emergency, they were travelling when the first news about the power plants started to appear. For now they are playing with MFSJ, a peaceful time/space island of serenity.

birds...and other creatures

I would never have thought to turn into a bird-watcher...and I’m sure one of my former colleagues would be damn pleased! Gosh...there I was, thinking that he was W.E.I.R.D. and look where I am now: ecstatic because yet another specimen of feathered-winged-creature has landed in my garden.
Since we bought our very own piece of Holland, my favourite activity is to sit at the window and...look outside. The previous owner gave MFSJ the perfect present: this old school poster with domestic birds on it (ok, names are in dutch, but we are in the google-era, knowledge is a few tappings on the keyboard away...). Just place a bird feeder at the garden gate (far away from your window) and you are ready to go.
...We had robins in the snow at Xmas
...there’s plenty of blackbirds (and they are FAT from all the bread they get to nick)
...a noisy clan of sparrows, with its rival clan of “kwikstaart” (which I think translates into wagtail)
...a big jay which favours the roof of the garden shed
...one or two magpies (oh, they are cute! called gazza ladra in Italian)
...one collared dove (colomba dal collare)
the list goes on, and so does our (my) fun.
We have no big trees in our stamp-sized piece of Holland, so the little birdies do feel a bit exposed, favouring the apple tree of the neighbor. But I am the proud owner of a honeysuckle, so I just have to wait for fruit season. And MFSJ decided NOT to eat the crust of her sandwich, so she brings home PLENTY of leftovers (blackbirds are really good at soaking them into the pond).

You might also like to know (or maybe not, but then just stop reading) that our two goldfishes are doing well. They live in the wooden barrel which collects water from the roof of the garden shed, and they are there to eat mosquito eggs. I know...it doesn’t really make sense to have a water barrel in our garden: it’s ALWAYS wet anyway...but there are one or two days of “hot” summer when the pond goes a bit below level, so we can use the water from the barrel to refill.
...and yes, I’m also quite eager to see the salamanders in the pond after the winter.

And thanks to my amazing origami skills, we get to see birds even at night: look at those paper cranes hanging from the window!

A New Home for an Old Lady

Remember the old bath tub in the new house? The old lady had plenty of enemies: MFJ, totally unable to make decisions and quite allergic to any DIY activity, the "architect" who kept saying that in his opinion the bathtub was a replica from 1980, extremely badly kept, and myself, unable to stand up to such levels of testosterone...with little time to restore the beauty, with the language barrier still set quite high, I was left to find a way to get rid of it. Meanwhile the old lady went from the bathroom to the bedroom, and from there to the living room downstairs.
and still I had no solution: a bath-to-couch conversion? place a plank of wood on top and make a dining table out of it?
the municipality doesn't pick it up: for them it's used building material (these guys are really smart), and various charities have only small vans...according to everyone, the Old Lady was TRASH.

I was desperate. I decided to write an e-mail to the mailing group called delft-cycle, where you can exchange "still usable goods"...worse that oculd have happened is an e-mail from the moderator asking to dispose of my trash in a proper way, right?
Lo and behold, within an hour I was exchanging e-mails with Lisette, super-determined in picking up the Old Lady.
So we made an appointment for last saturday (I was still insecure...what if they took a look to the bathtub and turned around never to come back?). ...an old Citroen 2cv pulled up at the front door: this car is known in Holland as "eendje" (the duckie). a Duckie from 1950s...from which emerged two people which oculd be superstars in a cartoon: where did these two come from?!

"you sure you want to get rid of it?"
"yes, we are building the new bathroom"
"let me see the bathroom"...we walk upstair.
"see...there's already a new bathtub fitted in"
"oh, ok...but you are sure?"
"well, the alternative was to convert it into trash by bashing it with a hammer"
"AAAAAAAAAH! God forbid!"

Frits brings his backpack, from which he produces a carpenter's stick measure. HE measures the tub. Goes out to talk it through...with the duckie, I'm sure.
Meanwhile, I inquire:
"Lisette, you are sure you can do this?"
"yeah yeah, we transported much heavier things with that old car"
maybe that old car was much younger back then: but now it's approaching the big 6-0 and...I don't dare to speak up, but I am worried. Lisette looks around and compliments us for the house. She suggests a few tips and ideas about the kitchen and how to bring it back to "the old days". She keeps smiling and saying what a beautiful family we are...I smile back, thinking exactly the same thing about these two, who are confident an old 1950s 2CV is the best carriage for my Old Lady.

OK, the duckie is ready. Lisette and Frits ask if maybe the two strong boys I have upstairs might help (well, ok, written like that it sounds intriguing, but...in reality one strong boy is Roy the plasterer, busy tiling the bathroom, and the other is the Practical Phylosopher, who kindly offered his skills to paint the wardrobe). I go upstairs, and Roy is already asking if he should help...I'd rather keep him safe: if he gets squashed by the Old Lady, who's going to match all the tile lines? No, Roy, really, no need...but you might want to see this one: they are planning to load the bathtub on an old 2CV...two boots are already half way downstairs.
The Practical Phylosopher is also determined not to miss such entartainment...
The old lady reaches the front door.
Two ominous japanese are back from the dump...the Old Lady must be worried they might be back for her and it becomes difficult to load it onto the duckie (maybe also because Frits forgot to pull the hand-brake and duckie starts to move while we hold the bathtub mid-air).
And finally the Old Lady sits on the duckie. we all say goodbye to eachother, I find a bottle of nicely wrapped red wine in my hand and the Old Lady is off, aboard a "vintage" duckie.
I couldn't find a better home for the Old Lady...I'm sure those two will make her happy.

ma magari era piu' giovane...adesso viaggia sui 60 anni e bisogna stare attenti alla schiena, no? mi dico tra me e me.

far raffreddare.

Ingredienti per anpan

300g farina tipo 00
1 confezione lievito di birra istantaneo (~7gr)
40gr zucchero
1/2 uovo sbattuto (tenete l'altra meta')
175cc acqua
1 cucchiaino raso di sale
45gr burro fuso

MFSJ is really cheeky: she claims to be fluent in Japanese (and you can't speak japanese, mama) and together with her dad she watches on YouTube all the episodes of Anpan-man...so I decided to impress her by baking anpan: sweet rolls filled with anko (which is just sweet azuki bean paste). My faithful assistant guaranteed the authenticity of the "made by japanese" with her presence, while mama did all the rest, anko included (not easy, in these busy times, to remember that the beans need to soak overnight).
The recipe comes from here, the technique is the same as that used for nikuman, although nikumans are steamed.
I don't know if I ever wrote the recipe for anko, which is the same we use for ourmicrowave cake, but here it is, together with my version of anpan...

Recipes here
Ingredients for anko
1 cup(240ml) di azuki beans, dry
1 pinch of salt
1 cup of sugar
1 liter of water for cooking
plenty of water for soaking
Preparation: soak the beans overnight. Rinse and cook for 10 minutes in 1/5 liter of water. drain, add fresh water and salt, and cook in the pressure cooker for 45 minutes. Rremove the lid, remove eccess water, add sugar and continue cooking, until all moisture is gone (you need to be able to handle anko and make little golf-ball sized things). Let cool down.

Ingredients for anpan

300g flour
1 sached dry instant baker yeast (~7gr)
40gr sugar
1/2 beaten egg (keep the rest for the egg wash)
175cc water
1 tsp salt
45gr melted butter
Preparation: mix all ingredients in a bowl, then on the table and knit for at least 10 minutes. Put the dough in a warm place for 1 hour to prove (I put it in a bowl, cover with a wet towel and place in the oven at 40C).
divide the dough in 12 parts, roll them and let them rest under a towel for 10 minutes while you prepare the anko balls. Flatten each piece of dough on your hand, place the anko ball in the middle and close all edges around it. place the anpan (seams under) on baking paper. Prove for another 40 minutes (always in warm environment) then bake for 15 minutes at 200C (or until golden).

What can I say...it was a SUCCESS! we made 10 and 5 are GONE! Great with green tea and also with barley coffee!

Lavori in Corso

I think this update is long overdue! After our first failures and successes at gardening, we finally got cleaning and painting. Thanks to the Italian Granparents who kept MFSJ for a week, we managed to deforest the jungle, before moving indoors. Read more
GH jump-started our work by thoroughly cleaning the kitchen, which we then painted (also the countertop, which was beyond dirty and damaged by water stains and burns). Rooms on the ground floor are now YELLOW (to imitate sunshine, since we don't get much of that at these latitudes and, yes indeed, to try and match the stained glass windows). MFSJ decided her bedroom was the one with the faux-marble fireplace, so her uncle set to work. Last but not least, we knocked the bathroom down. "we" being WW (Wonder Woman) and I. MFJ and his brother felt safer downstairs painting, while us WOMEN got busy. We are the queens of jackhammering. Great workout, and great way to get rid of your frustrations. Personally, all my tyrosinasic frustrations accumulated in years of useless PhD attempts finally got me somewhere! I feel I ought to send and "thank you" card to EggHead: just the THOUGHT of him sitting at his oversized meeting table got me so angry that not even the shower wall could withstand my blows.
Finally: the bath tub! After a thorough clean, I realized that the paint (from the brushes and rolls in need of a good clean) damaged the enamel. I think it will have to go, although MFJ found the miracle kit. What can I say? Maybe the idea of converting it into canoe is not too far-fetched!
