the celebrations for the third birthday of MFSJ are aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalomst reaching an end...she still would very much like to stick to her jumper that piece of paper shaped like a "3" which reads "Corinna is jarig", and for a couple of days we had to sing "lang zal zij leven" in front of the left over cake, while standing on the chair. but it's fun. Tonight we will open the parcel from Japan (it took a while to arrive!). ah, how nice when birthdays are still one digit only, when the candles on the cake don't cause you asthma when you try to blow them out, and when a piece of double chocolate cake with custard filling and white chocolate frosting with smarties decorations just bring you joy, instead of thinking already that to burn all those calories you'll have to start running around town at least three times...

Celerations for MFSJ started early in the morning of saturday...she was still in her bed when the huge red parcel with white polka dots came through the door. the little one is not stupid...she immediately declared "een huis!"...and with the energy of a three year old she shredded the packaging. "oh wow" was her final comment: I love the fact that kids can't lie! her big eyes got even bigger when she saw the second parcel...that was a shapeless one...so she couldn't figure out what it was. in two seconds flat the wrapping was in pieces and the little bed of a hcildren bedroom came out. third pressie was the master bedroom, and fourth one was the kitchen. It's true that we didn't have any dolls to go and live in the house, but that was SOOOO not a problem! if you look carefully at the photo in this post, you'll see that the cheeky monkey found immediately a few homeless in need of a roof above their head. Noah and his wife decided that this boat-full-of-animals businness was not really convenient given their age, and accepted MFSJ invitation. not all is well under the new roof, mind you: Noah sleeps in the wardrobe, while the wife uses the small bed...Noah must have made one big big mistake of some sort, 'cause MFSJ declared "brutto" (i.e. "ugly", but also "evil" or "naughty") while slamming the door on the Great Patriarch's face. to keep the old couple company we have a frog (kikker), present of GH, the little Kawaii-bear which we rescued from a bag of yarns and god-knows-what-else which the japanese grandma keeps to decorate presents, a wooden puzzle-cow which caused a lot of chaos when it entered the kitchen before going to sleep in the big bed, then there's a bunny (again, from Japan), Noah's cat and dog (looks like the big boat might sink without the owners), another cat named Poesje (born from the hands of your faithfully here...when we had a tonsillitis emergency) and, of course, our forever-loved and loving Totoro. MFSJ immediately requested a shopping bag for Noah's wife...she needed urgently to get some groceries, given all those hungry stomachs! my crochet hook was out in no time. two screw-caps from juice bottles became the first pots of the kitchen. and we all agreed not to use the oven: Kawaii uses it as sleeping quarters, to keep warm, you see?...
I don't know who is having more fun: MFSJ with her woden house or her mum making notes of all the events taking place under the new roof? I have to admit that every screw-cap is now carefully inspected (colour and dimantions are important, you know?) and my crochet hook with a selections of yarns is on the windowsill in MFSJ's room...so that I'd be ready in case Noah needed a hammock.

In the doldrums
[...]
Day after day, day after day,
We stuck, nor breath nor motion;
As idle as a painted ship
Upon a painted ocean.

I used to LOVE reading poetry and imagining how those beautiful foreign words would sound. Now they are not that foreign anymore, but I still would love to hear them coming out of the lips of a "native" ;-)

tiramisu'-book number two (number one is this one, just 'cause I read it first). Book number 2 had been on my “to read” list for so long! Since I saw the movie About a boy (don’t you dare pointing the finger, ‘cause I didn’t know at the time that the idea for the movie came from a book), so when I dragged myself to the shelf in the book store, it was already screaming at me “I’m HERE, HERE HERE!!! Pick me, pick me, pick me…you know you want to”.

It’s an amazing, hilarious, upsetting story. Nick Hornby writes entirely from the point of view of a woman, and he does a good job! Katie is a GP, she is a good person, or so she thinks…oh, well,…apart from wanting a divorce from her annoyingly cynical husband and allowing herself to have an affair. So, how does she survives the sudden transformation of such a husband, now set to BE GOOD, be CRAZILY good, which implies, among other actions, taking in homeless, giving away the kids’ toys, and convincing the neighborhood to do the same? You’ll find out if you read this.
It’s a page turner, it’s a heart stabber. And the last stab comes in the very last sentence: you automatically turn the page, and there’s nothing there to read.
