Translation of the title: BILGE PUMP...and no, I don't want to sail around the canals using the old bathtub, it's just that this cold monsoon season crossing (?! permanently staying?) the Netherlands has produced lots of water, and it looks to me as if all of that water entered our garden shed...where the floor is 10cm below ground. After closer inspection, I think the flooding was caused by the Evil Yvy invading the gutter. Ok, maybe also the fact that the roof and said gutter are 1cm apart (horizontally, that is).
Anyway...we removed all the water, first using a big bucket, then a baby-bucket (MFSJ had a lot of fun), then the little pump provided with MFSJ's new "waterplay" set (mama had to do that, MFSJ is not very experienced yet).
Cold monsoon season is still going strong, so yours truly here is heading for the shops to buy a bilge pump. I don't intend to remove another 300 liters of water using a babybucket!

re-calibration

Do you know what a pH-meter is? Maybe not...anyway: generally this little gadget needs to be re-calibrated every day, so it can keep its accuracy in measuring the acidity of every solution you want. If you don't recalibrate, you risk to measure something that is far from the truth. And how do you recalibrate? You dip the electrode in standard solutions, generally set at pH4, pH7, pH10. The modern versions of this gadget do everything themselves, they just need some reassurance: you dip, they detect, you acknowledge their acumen by pressing "ok", and once you told them three times that they are right, they proudly reset themselves and declare to be ready to measure the pH of your solutions with ELECTRONIC PRECISION.
There...I'd say that my Italian holidays are my very own periodical recalibration...I do envy the "electronic precision" of those little gadgets, though.
In my case the standards are a bit more complicated, heterogeneous, but always reliable (so far) and with some essential ingredients: there's GH with her cuisine and her "sartoria", there's DIM, with his veggie garden and his thousands activities (Protezione Civile, Parochial kindergarten, and the City Hall, although the leading group changed more than a year ago, they still seem to need help) and there's my "little" brother...who was only 11 when I left and is now a young man busy at vet school. He even likes it! He enjoys listing the names of the little bones he finds in the stew, he tries to raise chickens and chinese quails, he is the proud holder of a hunting license (I know, you better ask him), he is also involved as volunteer for the local Protezione Civile, he manages to keep DIM at bay...you could even say they agree with each other at times!
And, there's Lilli: old, arthritic and sleepy (as all 14 year old dogs) but still gutsy and spirited when it comes to bite a certain hand (that of the abovementioned little brother).
This time I was super-lucky: I met my "kindergarten friends" and my favourite chestnut-thief...I even managed a quick visit to Verona and thereabouts, for a much-needed stocking-up of good moods (Veronesi tuti mati), lightheartedness, laughs, foods and wines (Lugana, risotto agli asparagi, tortellini di Valeggio...yummy!), cuddles, memories and PHOTOS.
In summary, you go back to Italy for a jump into the past and a quick stroll in this parallel present time...
In this vortex of a lost in translation life, where you have to combine different cultures, cuisines and languages you can, at times, loose your direction...you forget where you come from and where you are heading.

Thank you all!
If I were a poet, I could invent a beautiful metaphor, and you'd all become lighthouses for my boat sailing into uncharted territories, My North Star, shining in the darkest of nights. Luckily I'm a wannabe scientist, so the metaphor can be much more prosaic: you are my recalibration standards.

Giardinaggio 2

Abbiamo rempito 4 sacconi dell'immondizia, e i rami tolti a Mambu-Bambu li abbiamo messi a seccare.

Do you remember the sumo wrestler-like hortensia? well...today I went back, bringing reinforcements...and rations. MFSJ was put in charge of distributing drinks and snacks, while MFJ and I delivered our mortal attack to some particularly offensive speciments.

The ivy was cut back, the overgrown undergrowth in front of the kitchen has now disappeared, revealing an UVO (Unidentified Vegetal Object), in need of identification. We filled 4 bin bags. The sticks cut away from Mambu-Bambu were left to dry. All the terracotta pots still intact were washed and put away in the shed, the broken ones went into the binbag too. During our offensive, we gathered a few archeological findings: a porcelain frog, a thermometer for outdoors, a rusted "thingy"....and a rosemary as well as some strawberries! We even spotted another salamander, this one with dots on its skin.
Big Big projects for our Little Little Jungle. But first, a detour to Gamma, to buy proper tools!
