Giardinaggio

Dopo decenni lontani da un giardino decente, era prevedibile che il primo pomeriggio di ...ehm...giardinaggio non sarebbe stato un gran successo. Ebbene, posso tranquillamente ammettere che l'ortensia o-sumo-san ha sbaragliato l'avversario, ovvero me, armata di vanga dal manico elefantiaco. Persino la MSGP non ha saputo cosa dire (e si che lei non tace mai in questi giorni).

Lumache, bombi (quelli che subaffittano una delle due casette per gli uccellini), farfalle e ragnetti se la sono goduta proprio, questa scena! ma non crediate che mi sia data per vinta! Ho inforcato le forbici e rasato l'impudica avversaria a zero (...le radici le tolgo la prossima volta). Oooooooooooh, quali meraviglie si nascondevano dietro tanta rigogliosa verzura: il muretto di cinta!!! Sormontato da due vasche in cui sembra che qualcuno abbia seminato... rovi?! Un adorabile (e piccola! questa ci piace) felce che era sfuggita al censimento, il tronco del caprifoglio in fiore, una strana piantina con le bacche rosse che somiglia ad un bosso in miniatura e una nidiata di uova di lumaca.
La MSGP ha saltellato qui e la', sfoderando i suoi guantini da giardinaggio e decidendo con un criterio tutto suo quali rami d'ortensia erano da buttare e quali erano da conservare. ha costruito un parco giochi per due lumachine, ha messo in un vaso in casa un soffione enorme (grande quanto una palla da tennis, questo non e' un tarassaco!), ha osservato estasiata una salamandrina con la testa incastrata nel guscio di una lumaca affogata nello stagno.
Ammetto che rapare a zero la verzura mi fa sentire un po' in colpa...cosi' per rimediare e contribuire alla biodiversita' della giungletta, abbiamo seminato
girasoli (in un vaso di terracotta trovato in giardino)
un mix per api felici (in un altro vaso di terracotta smaltata di blu-verde)
i lupini colorati (vicino allo stagno...non c'entrano niente con la vegetazione endemica della zona, ma sono sicura che le piccole salamandre apprezzeranno un po' di colore)
Abbiamo anche fatto manutenzione ordinaria allo stagno: abbiamo aggiunto acqua e tolto un po' di alghe per liberare un pochino la superficie. Mi sono rassegnata a tagliare (terribilmente fuori stagione) alcuni rami della vigna vicino alla cucina...non ne potevo piu' di essere schiaffeggiata ogni volta che aprivo la porta! E poi, cara vigna mia, ti devi arrampicare sulla pergola, NON entrarmi in casa dalla finestra del salotto!!! Anche il bambu' e' stato accudito: tolti i rami secchi (prontamente messi da parte, vanno benissimo come sostegno per altre pianticelle) e sfoltita la chioma generosa...
soddisfatte dei danni arrecati in sole due ore di "pottering about", siamo tornate alla base, non prima di aver fatto un giro di ricognizione in tutta la casa: la MSGP adora guardare il giardino dalla finestra del bagno...mi ha fatto vedere dove avevamo lavorato ed ha commentato "wat goed jij heb gedaan daar, mama" (che bel lavoro che hai fatto la', mamma) indicando l'ortensia sparita.
Finiti sono i giorni del balconaggio...evviva!

After decades spent away from any decent-sized garden, I should ahve known that my first gardening day could not be a successfull one! Well, I can gentlewomanly declare that the o-sumo-san-like hortensia defeated her opponent, i.e. ME, armed of a shovel with the handle the size of my arm. even MFSJ was speechless (rare event in these days of loghorroic development).

Snails, bumblebees (those subletting the birdhouse on the side of the garden shed), butterflies and caterpillars laughed, I'm sure, at this amusing scene. But don't ever think I can be easily defeated...I changed my weapon, and SHAVED my enemy to its bare stump (which I'll remove next time). Oooooooooooh, what wonders I did discover behind such green opulence: the garden wall!!! topped by two vases in which someone had planted...brambles? An adorable (and SMALL, this we like it) fern which had escaped the first census last week, the trunk of the honeysuckle, a strange plant with red little berries which looks like a boxus, and a large snail nest full of eggs.
MFSJ jumped here and there, clearly proud of her gardening gloves, deciding which bits of hortensia to keep (the criterion for this choice is not yet clear to me). She also built a little meryy-go-around for two snails, and placed a HUGE and puffy dandelion-like seed head in a glass of water indoors. And we finally saw a little salamander in action: the little head stuck in the shell of a drowned snail!
I have to admit it: shaving off the hortensia made me feel a bit guilty...but it was occupying our best sunny spot! Anyway, to feel less guilty and contribute to the biodiversity of our Little Jungle, we proceeded to plant:
sunflowers, in a terracotta pot found in the garden
a mix of seeds for "happy bees", in another pot
coloured lupins around the pond (not really in keep with the endemic vegetation, but I'm sure our little amphibian friends will enjoy the colours)
We also took care of the pond: removed some weeds and refilled with water.
I also had to cut a few branches of the vine by the house: terribly our of season, I know...but I was fedup with being slapped every time I opened the door! my dear vine, you are supposed to climb the pergola, NOT to get into my house from the living room! We also took care of our bamboo: old dry twigs were put aside to be used for other plants in need of support, and we cut down the green a bit (it was trying to get into the kitchen).
Really pleased with the "damages" of two hours of pottering about, we went back, not before heading upstairs for a quick snoop around: MFSJ loves to look at the garden from the window...so she indicated what we did and then commented "wat goed jij heb gedaan daar, mama" (what a good job you did there, mum) pointing at the missing hortensia.
No more balconing! Hurray!

Casa

Antonietta quando e' di corsa dice che le pare di essere in un frullatore...penso di aver capito finalmente cosa intende. Le ultime settimane sembravano ambientate in una ultracentrifuga analitica! La scuola, il doposcuola, il lavoro e...LA CASA! Martedi' scorso abbiamo firmato l'atto di compravendita ed il contratto con la banca, e CI HANNO DATO LE CHIAVI.

Mi sarei fatta un pianto, se non fosse stato che ero seduta vicino al mio makelaar e non volevo fare una figuraccia. Che tensione. Il notaio ha voluto che ci fossero due traduttrici, una italiano-olandese e una giapponese-olandese: del tutto superflue, ma meglio andare sul sicuro.
Ma allora, questa reggia? Qui sopra le prime foto, fatte tempo fa ma tenute ben nascoste per scaramanzia...
Stasera siamo tornati con la MSGP, per misurare ogni angolo polveroso, ogni muro, ogni battiscopa, ogni finestra, ogni infisso...la MSGP ha scelto la cameretta (ebbene si, e' quella con il caminetto) e poi si e' appollaiata sul davanzale della finestra del salotto a giocare con il "computer" di Dora l'Esploratrice.
Inizia l'avventura, gente! Unico neo...avete visto il bagno? da rifare...mi appello a tutti gli interior designer e a tutti gli architetti di buona volonta': se vi mando un disegno dettagliato con tutte le misure e le posizioni dei vari tubi e degli scarichi, mi aiutate a ridisegnarlo?
Per il resto questa reggia ci piace proprio cosi' com'e'! nonostante la cucina sia piiiiiiiiiiiiiiccola e aaaaaaaaaaaaaaalta: il gigante che ci abitava prima ha messo tutto a 96cm dal suolo...60cm piu' su finisce la mia testa! Il gigante buono pero' mi ha lasciato in omaggio un grazioso sgabellino antisdrucciolo dell'Ikea...assolutamente inutile per un tappetto come me!
Il giardino...ma si apprezza il giardino da queste due foto? E' una giungla!!! sabato prossimo andiamo in missione esplorativa armati di macchina fotografica e quaderno per gli appunti: mi e' stato promesso un consulto botanico gratuito per la classificazione delle varie specie presenti, e penso di approfittarne.
Ci sarebbe tantissimo altro da raccontare, ma per ora mi fermo qui...

I wanted to cry, really, while holding those keys with red labels and smiley faces. I just didn't want to cry in front of my makelaar, the notaris, the seller, his makelaar, and the two translators (italian-dutch and japanese-dutch, totally unnecessary but "better to be safe").
I know what yuo are thinking...so? what does this castle of yous look like?
Well, a few photos are here above, we took them a month ago but kept them hidden "just in case". Tonight we went back with MFSJ, to measure every single dusty corner, every single wall, every single baseboard, every window and every window frame...MFSJ decided which room she wants (oh dear, it's the one with the fire place!) and then perched herself on the windowsill downstairs to play with her "computer".
Here we go, people: new adventure! Only problem...the bathroom...have you seen it? To every willing interior designer and architect out there: if I send you a detailed map with the position of all the pipes, would you help me to think what to do with it?
For the rest, we love every single bit of the new castle...even the small kitchen which belonged to a giant: the Giant placed everything very conveniently at his height, meaning that the worktop is at 96cm from the ground...if you consider that 60cm above it it's the end of me head, you can imagine it won't be easy for me to cook. The Good Giant kindly left behind a cute anti-slip step (yep! the Ikea one, the same one every kid in kikkerland uses to reach the toilet seat)...I really appreciate the gesture, I really really do...but the little step is totally useless for someone as short as me! never mind, I'll learn to cook standing on a ladder.
Now, moving on: THE GARDEN! But...HAVE YOU SEEN THE GARDEN? It's a jungle!!!
Coming saturday we plan to explore it properly, armed with camera and notepad: I have been promised a free botanical consulence and I am going to take advantage of it. We'll get all the weeds classified, with their proper latin name!
Oh, I would have so much more to say, but for now I better stop...

I fear this blog will become a boring collection of posts on restorations, gardening and moving...I CAN'T WAIT TO STAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAART!

PRIMO GIORNO DI SCUOLA

E cosi' da oggi si comincia...La MSGP ha ufficialmente cominciato scuola. Stamattina e' partita armata di zainetto, merenda (una banana protetta da questa fantastica invenzione), pranzo e bottiglietta di succo. All'uscita c'era la mamma ad aspettarla.

Insieme ci siamo accodate al gruppo diretto al "nostro" BSO, per abituarci a questa nuova situazione (al solito, queste misure preventive servono piu' a tranquillizzare la mamma che ad abituare la figlia). Diversi amichetti di scuola si sono incamminati con noi, ed una volta arrivati a destinazione ho scoperto che la MSGP ha un ammiratore: D., che gentilmente ha fatto strada, mostrando alla nuova arrivata dove mettere lo zainetto, dove appendere la giacca...e molto rispettosamente ha indicato le toilette per le bimbe (tu vai qui, io ti aspetto sulla porta). Insieme hanno sgranocchiato una fetta biscottata e poi sempre insieme hanno giocato un po'. la MSGP non ne voleva sapere di venire a casa, cosi' l'ho lasciata in buona compagnia e mi sono andata a bere un caffe' in solitudine. Mezz'ora dopo ero di ritorno, e dopo svariati tentativi sono riuscita a convincere la piccola che era ora di venire a casa. Un saluto al caro D. (tanto si vedono anche domani) e via...a casa.
Nonostante alcuni incidenti di percorso, la MSGP si sta rivelando una vera campionessa di adattabilita'! Qui sopra il suo primo disegno realizzato a scuola: si vede un sole, due farfalle, un cuoricino blu, il cielo e le nuvolette blu, una nuvoletta arancione, un fiore, la mamma con il vestito rosa, e giusto per far vedere che sa scrivere...il proprio nome AL CONTRARIO (il MGP dice che sono fissata con lo sviluppo delle abilita' matematiche e geometriche di mia figlia...ma in questo caso non ho colpa, la MSGP ha cominciato a scrivere il suo nome direttamente in entrambe le direzioni...)
La mamma, sia quella nel disegno che quella in carne ed ossa, sorride sollevata...


...and from this morning we start...MFSJ started OFFICIALLY school. This morning she left with her dad, armed with backpack, snack (A banana protected by this amazing invention), lunchbox and bottle of juice. This afternoon, mama was waiting outside.

Together we started tailing the group of adults and kids directed to "our" BSO, to get used to yet another novelty (as usual, these "getting used to" initiatives are for mama alone, not for the little one). More than one little kid from MFSJ's class joined the walking bus, and once arrived to destination I discovered that MFSJ has an admirer...D.! He kindly showed us where to put the bag, where to hang the jacket, ...and also where the girls' toilets are located (you can go in here, I wait outsite). Together they munched some bread, then always together went to play. She really didn't want to come home, so I left her there and went for a cup of coffee in total lonelyness. 1/2 hour later I was back, and managed EVENTUALLY to take away. A quick heart-felt goodbye to D. (they see each other tomorrow anyway) and back home we went.
Despite a few hiccups, I have to admit that MFSJ is a real champion of adaptability. I scanned her first school-made drawing: you see the sun, two butterflies, a blue heart, blue clouds and sky, one orange cloud, mama with a pink dress, and, just to demonstrate her writing abilities, her name written fro mright to left (MFJ says I'm obsessed with MFSJ's mathematical and geometrical development, but I claim no merits for this one...she started practicing her name from day one in ALL directions...)
Mommy, both the one in the drawing and the real one, smiles relieved...
