It's not that I am running out of topics, but I suddenly have this urge to emulate all of those fellow-bloggers who offer monthly updates on their reading: books read in the past month, books "on the bedside table", books to be read soon. My list is really dismal to say the least, but never mind.
How do I get my books? Well, I buy them, and beware of bookstores when you are with me: if you enter one, you'll never get out. Oh yes: there's a library in Leiden, but I still have to figure out where to find english titles (my dutch is still very poor). My third option is nicking my husband's books...he still stoically applies his rule "I wait for the movie" to any book on our bookshelves.
My last reading was a true calvary...painful to say the least.
But I am not one who gives up easily, if I start something, even a PhD that is costing me my sanity, I don't give up. Manu always gets to the end.
And I finally finished Lunar park. a sort of pseudo-autobiographical mix of decadence and horror, with monsters, even!

Bret Easton Ellis mixes reality and fiction, real and fictional characters...there's a dialogue between the writer and the protagonist which comes through towards the end and that is one of the very few good things I could find in thos 453 pages. yo ucan even find Patrick bateman again, the protagonist of American Psycho.
A calvary, really.
Redemption in my case came from the last 5 lines (well, maybe 5 and a half) with a yearning message for the son.
In view of those 5 lines, I could finally understand the importance of the father-son relationship in the book...although with all those monsters, and vodka-antidepressants cocktails, and hangovers and vomit...such importance is somewhat lost.
I could even try to read it again, but I think I'll wait for the movie.

democrazia

Umberto Eco
That I don't like Mr Tarmac-head is not big news (Mr Tarmac Head being the Italian Prime Minister, according to Beppe Grillo)...that said, I am not sure that the opposition in the Italian Parlament offers a great alternative...so, here's a reminder of what democracy is...written not by a silly wannabe-scientist, but by Umberto Eco (and, well, translated by the silly wannabe-scientist)

Dear Friends
while I express all my solidarity for your protest, I'd like it to be used to remind everyone two things that we are too often prone to forget:
1) democracy does not mean that the majority is right. It means taht the majority has the right to govern the country.
2) Democracy, hence, does not mean that the opposition (minority) is wrong. It means that, while respecting the government of the majority, the opposition must express itself aloud every time it thinks that the majority is wrong (or, even worse, thinks that the majority is doing things agaist the law, the ethics and principles of democracy). This expression of opinion must be done with the utmost energy, because this is the mandate the opposition received from the citizens. When the majority is always convinced to be in the right and the opposition does nothing, democracy is at risk.

thank you for smoking

The writer here has never touched a cigarette, I swear...and the title of the post comes straight from Hollywood (remember the movie? It was 2005)…

...like the protagonist Nick Naylor, also the Dutch are now facing the end of an era…from today, there is a smoke ban in cafe’ and restaurants. ABOUT TIME! It’s one of the last countries to comply with the European Law. I was really fed up with having to “enjoy” my penitence coffee in the fog of cigarette smoke…and let’s be honest: future mums will be finally safe from the ignorance of so-called friends who don’t hesitate to lit up a cigarette after dinner.
The position of the Netherlands is somewhat peculiar…marijuana is illegal but tolerated since 1976: you can smoke it in coffee shops. And marijuana is not part of the smoke ban (which regulates only tobacco smoke). I wonder what the owners of places like Abraxas came up with…did they bake an extra batch of space cakes? Pipes and bongs instead of rolled joints?I wouldn’t know…last time I set foot into a coffee shop was 2003, and it was for “touristic porpouses”…if you are interested in the “new face” of dutch coffee shops, come and look for yourself (and then let me know)…as for cafes and restaurants…if you offer to babysit I’ll take MFJ out for dinner, so we can enjoy dining out “smoke-free”…although I would be happy even just with dining out…got it? ;-)
